Counselor to coach: Adding coaching to your professional repertoire Laurie Hubbs, LPC, NCC, BCC www.LaurieHubbs.com

What is coaching? ‘a result-oriented, systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of life experience and goal-attainment in the personal and/or professional lives of normal, non- clinical clients.’ Grant, 2003, p.253

Historically Coaching has it’s roots in many disciplines: philosophy, sociology, anthropology, sports, communication science and even natural sciences (Brock, 2008). Most of the articles on coaching in peer reviewed journals have been in the areas of sports psychology e.g. Gallway 1974; Whitmore, 1992), clinical psychology (Berg & Szabo 2005; DeShazer, 1988), positive psychology (Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, 2000) and coaching psychology (Passmore, 2010).

According to this definition can be Applied to a multitude of coaching domains (personal coaching, leadership coaching, executive coaching, etc.) and coaches (executive, wellness, career, relationship, etc.) Emphasizes the self-directedness of the coaching process Recognizes coaching as a systematic process vs. a ‘good conversation’ (Leonard-Cross, 2010).

What does coaching do? Helps clients build coping mechanisms and resilience (Grant, Curtayne, & Burton, 2009). Increase mindfulness skills (Spence, Cavahagh, & Grant, 2008). Enhance self-enhancing attributions (Moen & Skaalvik, 2009) Develop better work/career attitudes leading to increased performance (Bozer & Sarrors, 2012; Judge, Thoresen, Bono, & Patton, 2001; Organ & Ryan, 1995). Heightens goal attainment expectancy (Evers, Brouwers, and Tomic, 2006; Moen & Skaalvik, 2009). Increases Goal progression and commitment (Green, Oades, & Grant, 2006). Expands self regulation skills and abilities (Locke & Latham, 2002).

The overall goal of coaching? Optimize functioning

Counseling & Coaching Differences and similarities are a topic of debate (Bono et al. 2009, Brunning, 2006, Hart, Blattner & Leipsic 2001). Grant’s (2003) definition distinguishes coaching from therapy by its focus on a non-clinical population.
