During the first 2 terms in Year 1 children will still have the opportunity for : Outdoor classroom , sand & water play Using duplo, jigsaws, construction equipment Writing/reading corner Puppets, small world play Work in small groups But they will start to experience more whole class teaching and working a little more independently

Lunch Time The children will still go into the hall for lunch with their Mid Day Assistant and then go out to play – as in Reception. It is even more important that your child knows what their choice is for lunch. We do have a menu in the class and will obviously help them if they forget!

Reading Books Changed twice a week Children choose their own book within a set book band Children need to get into the good habit of keeping their reading book in their book bag which they should bring to school every day

Homework Usually starts after October half term Given out most Fridays – on blue paper -and we encourage the children to try to bring it back when they can during the first few days of the next week

Types of Homework Number work Science e.g. addition , number games, shopping games, measuring items in home, Science e.g. recognising signs of seasons, different plants and animals

Geography Literacy e.g. weather, seasons, maps, plans e.g. matching rhyming words, putting in capital letters & full stops and spelling later on in the year

KIRFs Key Instant Recall Facts To help develop children’s fluency in mathematics, we have introduced: Key Instant Recall Facts - which will be sent home each half term. We expect children to practise their KIRFs regularly each week.

KIRFs These KIRFs are aligned with the new curriculum. They are intended to be challenging and are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work in schools

Home School Links Book The Blue Home School Links Book should be kept in the book bag if possible. As in Reception you can write in it when listening to your child read You are also welcome to write any comments if your child enjoys their homework sheet or found it difficult BUT Please – if you want a quick answer or ask a quick question just come and speak to the teachers at the end of the day

General Information Do not worry if you are away for the weekend or have visitors etc. – homework is not compulsory so if you do not have the time - don’t let your child worry. If your child is absent when letters are given out they are put in their tray to collect when they come back. Children still get Head Teacher points in Year 1

Please help your child choose their lunch before they come into school Encourage your child to remember to put their dinner ticket into the dinner pot, hand any letters to their Teacher or TA – but we will remind children to do this and ask them for any letters PLEASE label all your child’s school jumpers, cardigans, coats, plimsolls PE kit etc.

Home Time Arrangements If your child goes to Kaos, is collected by a child-minder or is collected by a grandparent or family friend - please make sure you write a letter giving your child’s new teacher this information as soon as possible in the new term.

End of the Day Year 1 children come out of the school through the door opposite the Library. For the first few weeks please try and stand where you can be seen and the teachers can see you.

Things you can do to help your child during the summer holidays Ensure they can dress themselves – there is no-one to help Year 1 teachers in the afternoon when the children do PE Keep up the reading on a regular basis Encourage some independence – the children will be expected to start being more independent in Year 1 right from the start !

PTA Coffee Morning Wednesday 6thJuly The PTA will be holding their last coffee morning of the Year and I shall be there if anyone wants to ask questions - perhaps something you think about after today. Miss Aitken and Mrs Watkins will also pop into the coffee morning so why not try to come along and meet them in a more relaxed occasion. Also the Charity we are supporting that day is Cancer Research UK – a very worthwhile cause – there will be tea, coffee, cakes, and a raffle

Thank You for coming along to this meeting Any questions ?
