LEVERAGING ON NigComSat-1R FOR CONVERGENCE & INNOVATIVE SERVICES WEST AFRICA CONVERGENCE CONFERENCE -WACC 2016 ON THEME: ENGAGE, REGULATE, LEVERAGE, LIVE CONVERGENCE Presented by: IBIYE MEMBERR 30TH NOVEMBER, 2016 Email: nigcomsatlagos@nigcomsat.gov.ng NIGERIAN COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE (NIGCOMSAT) LIMITED

Introduction The combined requirements developing from the utilization of the internet are overwhelming todays communication sector. Particularly with the heavy reliance on smart devices. This has increased user demand immensely, leveraging on internet service from any device at any time or any service provider such as NIGCOMSAT LTD. One operator alone cannot provide all these access platforms and solutions. This event is very timely in order to promote the convergence of communication services across board, which will improve our collective services and delivery to end users.

Convergence In general, convergence is the coming together of two or more distinct entities to form a new system. These could refer to markets(economies), technologies, services or even institutions. Convergence possibilities and actualization became accelerated on the emergence of digitization of Information Technology. Information Technology is hinged on Network services which one of it is the satellite network which usually converges with terrestrial networks.

A Simplistic Illustration of Convergence Earphones worked to Serve as antenna 2G Mobile Phone 2 3 1 2G Phone With Radio tuner integrated Digital radio 3G /4G Phone with Broadband and Internet radio Application 1 CONVERGED PHYSICAL TECHNOLOGIES for CONVERGED SERVICE Analogue Mobile Phone CONVERGED SERVICE (No radio circuitry needed for a radio service) Analogue radio

Forces Driving Modern Day Convergence Digitization of content and Information Technology. Worldwide deregulation trends and policies. The Internet & broadband. The quest for new markets and start-ups. The urgent need for a solution by looking into existing ones. Communication satellite.

Unique Attributes of a Satellite Network Satellite Network is; One of the easiest & fastest long distance network to setup. The most effective live broadcast ready technology. Economical and technologicaly resilient network which best works with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems employed to help in Detection, Alert, Response and Prevention (DARP) of the Nation’s infrastructural and economic resources.

The Value of Communication Satellites There are several ways communication satellite have added value to the drive of Convergence since its commercialization (it was once the only way to the internet in the past and greater opportunities still exist in the near future). This include broadcasting, Internet services, extending the reach of terrestrial Networks to almost impossible locations. A good example of these is the Maritime Industry which enjoys services including telemedicine, real-time interactive distance video training, surveillance and the list goes on. Without Communication satellites converging networks and eliminating the digital-divide, myriads of technology and market opportunities would never have been realized quickly or would be hard to achieve.

Versatility of The Satellite Infrastructure VSAT terminals can be relocated fast and quick. Despite all the advances in science and technology, humankind remain vulnerable to the effect of natural and man-made disasters. Communications satellite remains the major platform for rapid response emergency networks and at all phases of emergency and disaster management.

NigComSat-1R-The Orbital Conduit to Converged Networks Satellite Communication network is usually the major and most cost effective way of eliminating the rural & maritime communication disadvantage (The Digital Divide) when converged with terrestrial networks. Satellite ever strong relevance recently brought new market opportunities where OneWeb, Facebook and Google have been working to tap into and be a very powerful alternative to terrestrial networks regarding the Internet. With satellite technology you can have a wide range of tailored solutions per group of customers that can work as complimentary technology to extend connectivity solutions and hence facilitate faster convergence.

NigComSat-1R Payload The communication Payload located at 42.5 Degree East comprises of 28 transponders. C Band (36 MHz each) 4 Active Ku Band (31.5 MHz each) 14 Active Ka Band (120 MHz each) 8 active L Band (2 MHz and 4 MHz) 2 active

Infrastructure Convergence Providing a new level of terrestrial and satellite integration. Hunger for live broadcasting is as strong as ever, and satellite is a cost effective and efficient way of transmitting these feeds over large and difficult to reach areas. Connected devices will play an important part in improving viewers’ experiences. In the future, it won’t be about the speed of broadband to homes. it will be about the speed being able to support simultaneous streams, and more importantly that the broadband infrastructure is able to support this. Convergence is the emergence of a hybrid world which offers real enhancement to consumers experiences where available. There are locations where it is not economical to have a terrestrial connection and the satellite infrastructure fills the gap.

The Convergence Reality. Triple Play VOICE, VIDEO & DATA Convergence of Applications- Telco Operators – Broadcast Operators – Internet Service Providers - Regulators (NCC & NBC) – Cloud computing- Triple Play VOICE, VIDEO & DATA Triple Play VIDEO , DATA & VOICE INTERNET-FIBRE/MICROWAVE INTERNET-SATELLITE VSAT ISPs, Telco & Broadcast Operators (VOICE, VIDEO & DATA) Any user, any access, all devices, geographical location etc

Conclusion Government Policy Implementation. Communication satellites have always been a valuable drive for convergence and remains deeply relevant in the future of convergence.

The role of Satellite Communication is unending and Convergence is the future. Thank You!
