1.1 Importance of International Trade Dr. Reyadh Faras

1.2 International Trade and the Nation’s Standard of Living Economic relations between countries are measured by the ratio of their exports and imports of goods and services to their GDP (openness= (Ex+Im)/GDP) Openness is higher for smaller and developing countries, but why? (fig. 1-1) In general, trade grows faster than production (fig.1-2) Standards of living depend on trade: 1) Many raw materials are imported from abroad. 2) Many products if produced domestically will cost more than abroad, so its better to import them.
