There are Many Opportunities Available for Students: REUs NIH Summer Internship Program SURFs NIEHS Internship Program Pathways to Science Aberdeen Proving Ground Amgen Scholars SMART Program NIH Scholarship/Research Program These are just a few of the many opportunities you may find.

1. REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates) NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers.

REU Details… Students are granted stipends and, in most cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location. Topics available for research are Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Cyberinfrastructure, Earth Sciences, Education and Human Resources, Mathematical Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences and others.

Steps for finding an REU By using the NSF website, you may examine opportunities in the subject areas supported by various NSF units. you may also search by keywords to identify sites in particular research areas or with certain features, such as a particular location. CLICK ON A TOPIC: (I.E., biology, chemistry, social sciences, education, etc.) ENTER STATE: (i.e.: MD, NY, or ALL if you don’t care where you go) CLICK ON SEARCH USE LINKS TO FIND DETAILS OF PROJECTS, APPLICATIONS MATERIALS, AND CONTACT INFORMATION.

7. EACH OPPORTUNITY IS DIFFERENT SO READ THE REQUIREMENTS CAREFULLY. SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS: Important Information: Applicants must be US citizens or Permanent Residents (Green Card). Students must have completed an Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry sequence before the summer. All participants receive a stipend, free housing, food allowance and travel expenses. Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Neither the University of South Alabama nor the National Science Foundation can provide health insurance to participants in the program. All participants are fully responsible for their own health insurance coverage.   Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants. A contact person and contact information is listed for each site.

Most opportunities are listed sometime between November and January on the REU website with due dates between January and the end of March. Members of the OSPR and Mrs. Michelle Schwartz will both send numerous emails to all as various universities advertise their programs and recruit outstanding students. Watch for these notices!

2. SURF (Student Undergraduate Research Fellowships) The SURF program is run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. There are two primary sites for this program: Gaithersburg, Maryland and Boulder, Colorado, as well as individual university sites. It is designed to inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a unique research experience.

SURFs provide a wide range of possible research projects Students collaborate with potential mentors to carry out required research activities. Students complete the work over a 8 -11 week period in the summer, (usually taking place June to August). At the conclusion of the program, students often submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation.

For Students: Students will receive stipends typically ranging from $3,000 - $5,500 for the summer. Housing allotments are provided as needed. Travel costs may be provided in some cases. The application deadline for the NIST campuses is in early February. Others vary between mid-January and mid-March. Note that applications for this program must be sent through the Office of Sponsored Programs & Research (OSPR) and will take a little more time to prepare.

Listings are based on individual opportunities funded through the NIST SURF program. Each opportunity will provide application information and deadlines unique to the opportunity.

There are a variety of research programs including: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Physics, and Statistics. Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. NIST does not have application materials and does not select student participants. 3. Pathways to Science Pathways to Science is a project of the Institute for Broadening Participation. It supports pathways to the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. An emphasis is placed on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring, and resources.

Steps for Searching Pathways to Science Google pathwaystoscience.org and proceed to the website. From the header click Undergrads Under “Programs and Scholarships” click Paid summer research and internships for undergraduates. Search can be limited by program date, institution, and discipline. Listings are based on the host University.

Each “Pathways” program shows individual descriptions, fields, contacts, and participating institutions. Most programs are through NSF. Some are national opportunities. There is a key that shows “program icons”. (includes information about study abroad, portable funding, type of opportunity, etc.)

4. Amgen Scholars Program The Amgen Scholars Program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at 10 of the world’s leading educational institutions. The Program seeks to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers and to spark the interest and broaden the perspective of students considering scientific careers.

Steps for Searching Amgen Scholars Google amgenscholars.com and proceed to the website. Choose “Apply to be a scholar in the United States”. This page shows the Host Institutions, program dates, eligibility rules, and frequently asked questions.

More Amgen’s Information Students must: Be Sophomores, Juniors, or non-graduating Seniors Have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above Be interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.

AMGEN’s Continued: Each host institute has a separate application process and deadline. Programs start late May/early June and last through August. Preference is given to students who have performed research during the school year. Application deadlines are in early February.

5. NIH Scholarship/Research Program The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research.

Application opening date and eligibility requirements can be found on this page. Students must complete a 10-week Summer Laboratory Experience training after each year of scholarship support. Students will continue training as a full-time employee in an NIH research laboratory after graduation (1 year of full-time employment for every year of scholarship).

6. NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) This summer program allows students the opportunity to work at the NIH side-by-side with leading scientists. The laboratories are devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Some in-state locations of research laboratories include Bethesda, MD; Frederick, MD; and Baltimore, MD. Other out of state locations are listed on the website as well

7. NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) Summers of Discoveries Program This program is located in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and is also run through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and provides internships to outstanding high school, undergraduate, and graduate students interested in pursing careers in the biomedical/biological sciences to work on a research experience. Internships cover a minimum of 8 weeks, usually beginning in late May or early June. In addition to research, the summer activities usually include lectures, workshops and a Poster Day. This application is due in mid-November for the Summer of 2017.

8. Aberdeen Proving Ground As an ARL student employee you will not only be serving your nation, you will also be working with some of the top scientific minds in the research world. ARL scientists and engineers are at the forefront of their fields and are sought after as experts across federal and private organizations. ARL focuses its efforts in the areas of: computational information sciences; human research and engineering; sensors and electron devices; survivability and lethality analysis; vehicle technology; and weapons and materials research.
