Presentation transcript:

Light Year Visible light travels at a speed of 186,000 miles/second, or to think of this speed in terms of time and distance, a light- second is 186,000 miles (the equivalent of seven times around the Earth in a second!).

Calculate the following distances in miles light minute = 186,000 mi. x 60 sec. (1 minute) = 11,160,000 miles   light hour = 11,160,000 miles x 60 minutes (1 hour) = ????? light day = light week = light month = light year =

Calculations: light-minute = 186,000 mi. x 60 sec. = 11,160,000 miles   light-hour = 11,160,000 mi. x 60 min. = 669,600,000 miles light-day = 669,600,000 mi. x 24 hr. = 16,070,400,000 miles light-week = 16,070,400,000 mi. x 7 days = 112,492,800,000 miles light-month = 16,070,400,000 mi. x 30 days = 482,112,000,000 miles light-year = 16,070,400,000 mi. x 365.25 days = 5,869,713,600,000 miles

In the future, the distance measurement choice could be light years as our lives move deeper and deeper into space. Your team is to use their imagination to invent new ways to use the measurement light year. Each student in the group/team selects a different situation. Each student’s response can be a drawing, a written explanation or both, as long as the word light year appears somewhere in the response. The response should be created in each student’s ISN. Select your Team’s/Group’s BEST response to be turned in. Your team’s response will be graded on three factors: you have included the term light year; your use of the term light year is appropriate for that situation; and your idea has been presented clearly. The Team’s response should be drawn/created using a sheet of construction paper.   NOTE: It is not necessary for each student to prepare an entire product such as the ad, brochure, etc. for each situation. Only for the situation the Team turns in to be graded!
