Presentation transcript:

Topic: Reproductive Options The issue: I wish there were a way for teens to access accurate info about their reproductive rights, to help them make meaning of their options... maybe even a program that supports/ encourages communication about intimacy with other people, like partners and friends? For whom? Teen girls... specifics TBD. Maybe in California, where state laws favor reproductive autonomy for teens.

Reproductive Options: Why? 1) I care about reproductive justice and sex positivity; 2) Research supports the idea that teens with access to accurate reproductive info are more likely to meet traditional milestones of success (high school graduation, etc.) than their peers who do not have access to this info: Guttmacher Institute: “New Studies Signal Dangers of Limiting Teen Access to Birth Control Information and Services” (2005) http://www.guttmacher.org/media/nr/2005/01/18/

Resources - Education Scarleteen: http://www.scarleteen.com/ - Their “All About Abortion” page is packed with info -- http://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/all_about_abortion - “Cycle” method: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/bodies/get_with_the_flow_all_about _fam

Resources - Education/Engagement Laci Green's sex ed channel on YouTube ~ https://www.youtube.com/user/lacigreen Her episodes each focus on one sex ed issue She is sex positive, pro-consent, pro- communication, and fun

Resources - Engagement East Los High - serial show about teens & sex - Provides drama, a storyline, and information about what happens when a teen girl gets pregnant, including accurate info about pregnancy testing, and abortion laws in Cali

Resources - Ethics Sex Ed curricula sometimes put teens in charge of an egg, a bag of flour, or a bag of sugar After a week of trying to keep it safe, there's ample space for discussion about teen's experiences, fears, hopes http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr128.shtml
