Famous European Explorers! Who were these explorers & why are they famous? Vasco Nunez Balboa Juan Ponce De Leon Christopher Columbus Henry Hudson Jacques Cartier John Cabot

The European Continent

Reasons to Explore New Land: Why Would YOU want to explore? Expand country's territory/land & rule over more land! King/Queen paid you to do it! Find riches, treasure, gold, spices, new things to trade! Find new ways to get there! Look for mythical things like the fountain of youth! Become famous & popular in your homeland! Adventure! Meet new people & see how they live!

Vasco Nunez Balboa (1475-1519)‏ Spanish Conquistador 1st European to explore the Pacific Ocean Crossed through the Panama Canal

Balboa: Boa Constrictor Snake Balboa makes me think of a boa constrictor snake Snakes slither in a wave-like motion across from one side to get to another The Panama Canal ocean currents are in waves and Balboa moved from the Atlantic & Caribbean Side to the Pacific Side

You Try! Do the Balboa! Take your hand and arm and snake it up and down and across while you say to yourself, “Balboa snaked his way from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Panama Canal!” Kinesthetic (bodily) moves help you remember better!

More info on Balboa http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/b/balboa.shtml

Juan Ponce De Leon (1460-1521)‏ Spanish Conquistador 1st European to explore Florida Searching for the Fountain of Youth

“Ponce de L-L-L- Leon... Found FL-L-L-Florida” Here is another mneumonic device: focus on the “L” sound and repeat the above quote. Next, add the fact he was searching for the, “F...F...Fountain of Youth in F...F...Florida!”

St. Augustine, Florida If you go to St. Augustine, Florida, you can visit a fort where Ponce de Leon found a natural well & spring he thought would bring youth (it had sulfur, a healing mineral, in it) like Indian Springs & Warm Springs in GA.

More Info on Ponce de Leon http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/d/deleon.shtml

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)‏ Italian, but Sailed for Spain Landed in the Americas, but thought he was in the Indies (India)‏ Called the natives, Indians for this reason

“In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue!” Niña, Pinta, Santa Maria (3 ships)‏

More info on Columbus http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/c/columbus.shtml

Henry Hudson (1565-1611)‏ English/British, but Sailed for the Dutch (Holland & Netherlands)‏ Searching for the Northwest Passage (didn't exist yet due to ice!)‏ Hudson River, Strait, and Bay named for him Explored Arctic, Canada and what is now the Northeastern U.S.

What is the Northwest Passage? A sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific via Canada & the Arctic Would have been great for trading & faster travel, but ice blocked it in Hudson's days! 2009 was the first year ice melted enough to actually allow ships to pass, up 'til then there was too much ice to actually allow ships to sail this route

Hudson = Hudson River Area No cute rhymes, just imagine where the Hudson River is and that is where Hudson sailed!

More info on Hudson http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/h/hudson.shtml

Jacques Cartier (1491-1557)‏ French Navigator Searching for the Northwest Passage (didn't exist yet due to ice!)‏ Discovered the St. (Saint) Lawrence River Lived in Canada near Lake Huron & was searching for gold (didn't find it)‏ Kidnapped Indians hoping they'd tell him about gold

SAY WHA?? Practice Your French! “[zhahk]” “[kahr-tee-ey]” Click here to listen to how to pronounce his name: http://www.forvo.com/word/jacques_cartier/

Time for A Mnemonic Rhyme! Car-tee-ay wanted to save-the-day and find gold, There was none, he was told... Map of where he sailed But he didn't stop to quiver, Instead he settled along the St. Lawrence river!

More Cartier Info. http://library.thinkquest.org/J002678F/jacques_cartier.htm

John Cabot “Giovanni Caboto” (1450-1499)‏ Italian Navigator, Sailed for England Searching for the Northwest Passage (didn't exist yet due to ice!)‏ Landed in Newfoundland First British settler in Canada Explored 5 years after Columbus did

Cabot, Made a Habit...Rhyme Time! Of finding the North-West-Passage! Try clapping that rhyme using the hyphens for your rhythm pauses

Cabot more info... http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/c/cabot.shtml

Test Yourself! Who's who? Who “made a habit” of finding the NW Passage? Cabot Who wanted to “save the day” and find gold, but did not “quiver” and settled on the St. Lawrence “river”? Cartier What did Hudson do? Explored Hudson River area looking for NW Passage What did Columbus do in 1492? Sailed the ocean blue to N.A. Thought he was in India What did Ponce de L...L...Leon do? Settled FL...L..Florida looked for Fountain of Youth What did Balboa do? Snaked his way b/t Atlantic & Pacific via the Panama Canal
