Presentation transcript:

The law – why do we bother? “Because there would be an anarchy.” “A country can't work without laws.” As a form group, discuss whether or not you agree with these statements

Is it ever OK to break the law? How many people in your form group think yes? How many people think no? Give (sensible) reasons for your answers

Age of responsibility in the UK What is the age of criminal responsibility in the UK? 10 At what age can you ride a moped/ drive a car in the UK? 16/ 17 Up to what age are you considered a minor in the UK? 18 Anyone engaged in the act of "Sexting" under the age of 18 is breaking which law? Producing and distributing child pornography

Ages of responsibility in the UK How old do you have to be to buy and smoke cigarettes? 18 to buy/ 16 to smoke How old do you have to be to buy alcohol? 18 What age can you get married in the UK? 16 with permission, 18 without permission How old do you have to be to legally vote? What age do you have to be to get a job? From the age of 13 (with restrictions on hours etc)

Crazy laws from around the world – is it OK to break these ones??? Since 1986, US authorities have had the legal right to access any 180-day old email, without a warrant. In Mobile, Alabama, it is against the law to throw confetti or spray silly string. In Saudi Arabia, it is illegal for any woman to drive a car. Right now, it’s illegal for them to vote too. In Thailand it is illegal to step on money. In Iowa, it is illegal for a man with a moustache to kiss a woman in public. In Britain it is illegal to handle a salmon in suspicious circumstances. In Florida, it’s illegal to fart in a public place after 6pm on a Thursday. In England it is illegal to die in the House Of Parliament, but something tells me that if someone did do this, they wouldn’t face many repercussions? In Samoa it is illegal to forget your wife’s birthday. In Switzerland, it is illegal to flush a toilet after 10pm.

Some people like to bend/ break rules and laws. Would you really like to attend a school/ live in a society that has no rules? Discuss your reasons….
