Methods Results Background Methods Aim 50 vascular trainees responded (35.7%) Information gathered for 13 regions and 37 hospitals Operative exposure is key to training Units offer different surgical experiences Training in specific procedures can vary by placement Procedures were categorised into Open AAA Endovascular AAA: EVAR Special Aneurysm: EVAS, fEVAR, bEVAR, chimney EVAR, TEVAR, TAA, Type 1 TAA Carotid: Open carotid endarterectomy, Carotid artery stenting Renal Access Peripheral Bypass Venous: Open varicose veins, Foam sclerotherapy, Endovenous therapy Map out vascular surgery training opportunities in the UK Record trainee surgical experiences across the UK Determine if there is variation in surgical exposure amongst trainees Determine if training within each region is sufficient to cover all areas Rouleaux club regional representatives assembled lists of vascular trainees and the procedures performed in each hospital in the region An online survey was sent to vascular trainees Data on number of each surgery performed over a 3 month period (01/11/2015-31/01/2016) was recorded Median values of procedures performed over the 3 months for each hospital and region was calculated Heat maps were generated based on percentile

Results: Large variation between regions Open AAA EVAR Special Renal Access Peripheral Bypass Carotid Venous Scotland 3 5 14 6 16 Northern 6.5 1.5 5.5 8 12 Mersey 2 10 20 Yorkshire and Humber 7 25 19 North West 2.5 7.5 Wales 4 11 West Midlands East Midlands 1 15 South West 3.5 4.5 Wessex, Oxford London East of England 9 9.5 11.5 Kent, Surrey, Sussex 13.5

Variation within a region Different hospitals in East Midlands have different procedural exposure profiles. Hospitals Open AAA EVAR EVAS fEVAR bEVAR Chimney/ snorkel EVAR TEVAR TAA TypeATAA Renal Access Peripheral Bypass Open Carotid Endarterectomy Carotid Artery Stenting Open Varicose Veins Foam Sclerotherapy Endovenous Therapy Leicester Royal Infirmary 4 7 1 3 6 Northampton General Hospital 14 18 Derby Teaching Hospital 2

Conclusion Hospitals within regions have different “training profiles” Strategic placement of trainees could allow matching of training needs to opportunities
