The Digital Economy - a wealth of opportunity Digital Technologies - key stats £4.5bn GVA 90,000 people 12,800 vacancies The results of this year’s survey show that Scotland’s digital technologies industry continues to grow, just as the overall Scottish and UK economies, which showed in several indicators:   Sales: seven out of ten companies increased sales in 2016, even if the increases were smaller than in previous years Profit margins: 48% of businesses reported increased profit margins in 2016 and the share of companies experiencing decreasing margins was at an historic low (14% as opposed to 23% in 2014) Actuals compared to budget: 30% of businesses reported that their actual results for 2016 were better than budgets set at the start of the year. For 47% of businesses, actuals were very much in line with their original forecasts, compared to 35% in 2015. www.scotlandis.com

However, the need for university graduates continues to be a priority for the sector. 72% of respondents said that they are definitely or quite likely to recruit graduates in 2017. As the recruitment of graduates continues to be very competitive, the data showed that companies are increasingly embracing alternatives routes into the sector: 38% of respondents reported that they are likely to recruit modern apprentices in 2017, up from 29% last year. This is mainly linked to medium-sized and larger sized businesses being more willing to take on apprentices.   www.scotlandis.com
