How can we float pennies with these materials? News from Room 211 Month Ending October 31, 2016 Our Month What’s Coming Up October has been a very busy month. We also earned a celebration and had a class picnic. We made lunches for the Mainspring House shelter with our kindergarten buddies. Lastly, we did a fun STEAM project with Mrs. Mellman. In math, we have completed Unit 1. We have learned the 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 9’s, and 10’s tables in both multiplication and division. The girls and boys in Room 211 have put tremendous effort into practicing their math facts. Our Massachusetts maps are just about complete, and they look fabulous! We have learned about the major landforms and rivers in Massachusetts. Narrative writing was the focus in October. We wrote a number of short personal narratives using the writing process. Our pen pal letters were sent, and we’re anxiously awaiting responses. In reading, we’re using Somebody Wanted But So Then to help us summarize a story. We continue to learn about motion in science. This month we started experimenting with the wheel and axle. We documented our experimentation with our iPads and we’re using the Explain Everything app to explain our understanding. Math – We’ll continue to work with the multiplication and division tables. This month we’ll learn the 6’s, 7’s, and 8’s. Science – After our wheel-and-axle investigations, we’ll be experimenting with physical and chemical property changes. Social Studies – After reviewing our knowledge of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag, we’ll learn about King Philip’s War. ELA – We’ll be start the informational text unit in reading. In writing, we’ll continue with narrative text. We’ll also learn about non-fiction writing. Notices As a reminder, each student should complete his/her on-line reading log each week. It is due on Friday. Math facts should also be practiced, and the fact log returned when the student is secure with that fact family. Moby Max is a fun way to practice automaticity. Parent Teacher conferences will be held on November 15th, 17th, and 22nd. I used Sign-up Genius to schedule conferences, and it can be accessed via my website. In addition to the above early release days, there is no school on November 8th, 11th, 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Don’t forget to check Room 211’s blog for weekly updates of classroom happenings!
