All modules on your course will be Mandatory – these must be taken and passed Some modules have pre-requisites – you must pass pre-requisite modules before you can move on to higher level modules 10 credit modules are designed to expand work related skills and employability competencies. Undergraduate students are required to take and pass one 10-credit module in each year of their course.

Attendance All students are expected to attend the classes for which they are enrolled punctually and regularly, and it is their personal responsibility to ensure that they do so.

Coursework Assignments (1) The term ‘coursework’ is used to describe any type of assessed work that falls outside of the examination periods which take place at the end of each teaching block. This may include essays, dissertations/projects, presentations, artefacts, laboratory/studio work, locally arranged phase tests etc.

Ethics It is a requirement for all students and staff conducting research to gain ethical approval before conducting their research. All research proposals need to be subject to the University’s Ethical Approval process (before any research is conducted) via the University’s application and approval system.

Coursework Assignments (2) You must attempt all assessments at the first opportunity. Hand-in procedures and deadlines for submission will be clearly stated in the module guide or assessment brief. You should submit work well before the deadline. An extension to the deadline may be requested, but the request must be submitted before the due date.

Extensions of up 2 weeks are only given for genuine extenuating reasons - bad planning or loss of work are not valid reasons. Second extensions for the same piece of work are not permitted and any appeal must be lodged within 2 days of receiving a response. Work submitted after the published deadline will be awarded a mark of 0%.

Academic Dishonesty Examples of academic dishonesty include collusion, falsification, deceit, plagiarism, self plagiarism/re-presentation and cheating. The minimum penalty for a proven case of academic dishonesty is usually a mark of 0% in that module. A maximum penalty can be exclusion from the University. If a case is proven after graduation you could have an award rescinded.

Plagiarism You must reference all academic writing. The Coventry University Harvard Reference Style is the University’s recommended format. Full guidance on citing sources of information and referencing is available from the Centre for Academic Writing or via the Academic Support section of the Student Portal (https://students.coventry.ac.uk/CentreforAcademicWriting/Pages/Home.aspx).

Disciplinary Students are expected to behave appropriately at all times and any student who behaves inappropriately (called an ‘act of misconduct’) will be dealt with under the Student Disciplinary Procedures

Examinations You must attempt all examinations at the first opportunity. Misreading the examinations timetable is not accepted as a valid reason for missing an examination.

Extenuating Circumstances By attempting an assessment you are declaring yourself fit for the assessment. You cannot then claim extenuating circumstances after the event. Requests for an extension to a deadline, or deferral of assessment because of extenuating circumstances, must be submitted before the coursework deadline or exam and must be supported by appropriate third party evidence. Appeals against deferral decisions must be made within 7 working days of receiving a response. Detailed guidance is available in your Student Handbook

Assessment Boards & Results Marks received before the Assessment Board are provisional and subject to moderation by External Examiners and ratification by the Assessment Board. Provisional coursework marks will be made available via Moodle and detailed feedback will be given when work is returned. If you attempt and fail a module, you will be given one further attempt in the failed component.

If you fail a resit, you may, at the discretion of the assessment board, register to repeat the module(s) at the next available opportunity. If you fail your repeat attempt, you will be given a final resit. Where a module is repeated, complete reassessment in all components is required. Original marks are not carried forward to combine with repeat marks. The overall module mark for a reassessed module (resit or repeat) will be capped at 40%.

Progression To progress from one stage of the course to the next, a student must pass all modules required by the previous stage, which includes any pre-requisite modules Students who fail to attain sufficient modules to progress may, at the discretion of the Programme Assessment Board, be transferred onto a new course, be required to repeat the year, or be recommended to withdraw If you do not fully engage with your course (e.g. repeated non-attendance at teaching sessions and/or not taking part in assessments) you may be required to withdraw from your course.

Awards and Classifications Minimum credit requirements for academic awards are set out in the Academic Regulations. Specific module pass requirements for each named academic award are stated in the course handbook. A course may require specific modules to be included in the classification calculation. All results are released on SOLAR. Only students completing awards or exiting the course will be sent results notification letters.

Reviews and Appeals You may request a review or make an appeal against a Programme Assessment Board decision within 10 days of receiving official notification of your results. You are encouraged to meet with your tutor, to discuss any feedback, before submitting a review request. Disagreement with the academic judgement of an Assessment Board does not in itself constitute grounds for requesting a review or appeal.
