World Scholar’s Cup Elverum Feb 12 - 13 How to Prepare in 14 Days

2017: An Unlikely World Special Area – TBA Science & Technology – To Shoot for the Moon History – History of Conspiracy Literature – Voices of the Almost Impossible Art & Music – Fragments of an Improbable Universe Social Studies – Predicting the Future

How to Prepare in 14 days or less You will take part in four events: Scholars Challenge Scholar’s Bowl Collaborative Writing A Team Debate Click on link above to see how to prepare for each of these events. (To get back to this page click on the Norway icon at the bottom of each page)

Team Debate In Team Debate, you'll face teams from other schools and countries, three-on- three, and argue motions related to the theme. WSC site page http://www.scholarscup.org/events/#team-debate Use the template in the links below to prepare your debate. Debate template explained Debate template Write your points onto the template as you prepare for the debate.

Each team debates three times, on motions across all the subjects, from policy to poetry. You may be arguing whether parents should have access to surveillance cameras at schools— or whether women make better superheroes. Debate is your chance to apply all that you’ve learned to make the most persuasive case you can. And, win or not, after each debate, you’ll give the other team feedback on how to improve. Each of you will speak up to 4 minutes. But first, you’ll have 15 minutes to research your argument, with full access to the Internet.

How do you prepare? Ask your teacher if you can have a practise debate in class. Use the template in the slide below to prepare your speeches. Work as a team and support each other. Use this link to get the scoring rubrics for the debates

Scholar's Bowl In Scholar's Bowl, your team will race the clock to answer questions using a special clicker. http://www.scholarscup.org/events/#scholars-bowl Questions from the material on the World Scholar’s Cup will shown on a big screen and in your teams you will choose the answer. Use the clicker to give your answer.

Sample Scholar’s Bowl powerpoint At this World Scholar’s Cup website you can download a powerpoint that has a sample scholar’s Bowl presentation. All the questions in the Scholar’s Bowl come from the resources on the WSC website. To prepare for it each of your team needs to choose a subject area and start reading through the information that interests them. Yes, there is a lot of information but just read as much as you can. Follow your interests. During the Scholar’s Bowl you will each share information and help each other.

Collaborative Writing In Collaborative Writing, you'll work with your team to argue positions related to the theme in written form. http://www.scholarscup.org/events/#collaborative-writing Your essay will be marked against this rubric

Essay writing You’ll be given six statements, each from a different subject area, and asked to choose one to argue for or against. You’ll first have 30 minutes to prepare with your teammates, then an hour by yourself to compose the most persuasive essay possible, then 15 more minutes to work together at the end. Here’s the catch: each member of your team has to choose a different topic.

Essay writing guide Use this guide to structure your essay The World Scholar’s Cup Collaborative Essay Guide

Scholar's Challenge In Scholar's Challenge, you'll take a test called the Scholar's Challenge: an opportunity to win individual medals and other prizes across multiple subjects. http://www.scholarscup.org/events/#scholars-challenge A sample set of questions

How to prepare for the Scholar’s Challenge This is a multiple choice test where the questions come from the resources on the World Scholar’s website in the 2017 Subjects section. There is far too much information for any student to read on their own. You need to divide up the sections and then read and research the parts you are interested in. You will be amazed at how much you will read once you get started. .

The secret to preparing? Just start. Look through the subjects and read what interests you. You will find lots of interesting stuff. The goal of the competition is to have fun, and you will. See you there
