Mentoring Support and Guidelines Mentoring Support and Guidelines Ileana Jimenez Garcia ‘87 & Meg McGrory Kelleher ’81, Co-Chairs of the BCAA Mentoring Committee Types of Mentoring: Formal Mutually identify and commit to accomplishing specific goals: Ex. A Mentee seeks to enter a different industry Establish indicators of success and measure progress: Ex. Identify obstacles to entry and solutions; create an action plan. Informal A more experienced professional shares general insights Ex. A Mentor describes her approach to dealing with into career development and working life: change in her organization successfully.

Attributes of a Successful Mentor and Mentee Meg An Effective Mentor… Proactively shares information Exhibits flexibility and makes himself or herself available Guides the Mentee to identify and develop skills and capabilities Listens attentively Asks for and offers feedback An Effective Mentee… Prepares questions and listens to answers with an open mind Takes initiative to schedule meetings and identify goals, discussion topics, etc. Applies advice from his or her Mentor Articulates specific questions and concerns Asks for and offers feedback

Mentoring Support and Guidelines Meg Mentoring is NOT: Intended to secure the Mentee a job, or dictate a decision A performance review A relationship to address personal or private challenges

Mentoring Support and Guidelines Ileana A Mentor’s Responsibilities: Coach Facilitate Counsel Network A Mentee’s Responsibilities: Initiate first contact; drive the relationship Set and communicate professional goals Assess your strengths and areas for improvement Ask for feedback; provide the Mentor with feedback Apply and assess the mentor’s advice

Mentoring Support and Guidelines Ileana Joint Responsibilities Establish relationship goals & success indicators Demonstrate respect, honesty, and ensure common understanding Build your relationship contract How often do we want to meet? Where? Primary method of communication? What are the goals of our relationship? How will we know when we’ve reached them? If a meeting gets cancelled, who is responsible for rescheduling? What information is and is not confidential?

Alumni2Alumni Guidelines Ileana 1-year commitment for the pilot program (March 2017 – March 2018) Mentor and Mentee connect at least four times within the pilot year Complete mid-year and end-of-year program evaluations
