Waves How are waves connected to our big idea of weathering, erosion, and deposition?

Waves What do you need to know? How waves get their energy How waves cause erosion. What kind of features result from deposition of waves.

Formation of waves Energy in waves comes from wind that blows across the water’s surface The energy that water picks up from the wind causes water particles to move up and down as the wave goes by In deep water, a wave only affects water near the surface. In shallow water, the wave begins to drag on the bottom due to friction which causes waves to slow down. The forward moving water is the force that shapes the land along the shoreline

Erosion by waves Waves shape the coast through erosion by breaking down rock and transporting sand and other sediment. Impact erosion- large waves crash against rocks which can lead to cracks that can get larger over time Abrasion erosion- A shallow wave picks up sediment like sand and gravel acting like sandpaper wearing away rock.

Deposits by wave Waves shape a coast when they deposit sediment, forming coastal features such as beaches, spits, and barrier beaches. Deposition occurs when a wave slows down and drops the sediment it was carrying.
