Student Reading Activity In science, the word diet means what you eat. Your diet provides raw materials for your body, which are needed for energy (to move, keep warm, make new materials), growth and repair, and health. Food substances that provide raw materials are called nutrients. These include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Two main carbohydrates in food are starch and sugars. Water is also classed as a nutrient as it is a key component of your body. We also need to eat Fibre. This is made from the plant cell wall (cellulose) and is not used by the body, but it keeps food moving through the intestines and stopping them from getting blocked (constipation)
