Volume of Cubes and Right Prisms Lesson North American Lecture Lesson By: Beverly Watola

Today will learn to find the volume of a right prism.

Let’s name each of the right prisms below.

Essential Questions How can you find the volume of a cube? How can you find the volume of a rectangular prism? How can I find the volume of a triangular prism?

Today we will learn how to find the volume of a cube. Volume is the amount of space inside a 3- dimensional figure. It is measured in cubic units. A cubic centimeter is a cube that is 1 cm wide, 1 cm long, and 1 cm high. Another way to think of volume is to find the number of unit cubes necessary for building the figure.

How many cubes would it take to build this figure?

Now let’s figure out how many inch cubes it would take to built this cube?

STOP AND QUIZ YOURSELF! Set 1: Set 2: Turn and Talk to Your Partner: CHOOSE WHICH OF THE 2 SETS OF QUESTIONS YOU WILL ANSWER. Set 1: a. Create a metaphor for volume. (SE) b. Summarize: in your own words, restate what we’ve said. (M) Set 2: A Which part of finding volume of a cube is hardest? Which is easiest? (I) b. Find information in your organizer that proves or disproves this statement. To find the volume of a cube use this formula V = L x W x V. (U)

Today we will also learn how to find the volume of a rectangular prism.

How many cubes would it take to create the rectangular prism?

Let’s find the volume of this rectangular prism?

Now let’s find the volume of this rectangular prism!

STOP AND QUIZ YOURSELF! Set 1: Set 2: Turn and Talk to Your Partner: CHOOSE WHICH OF THE 2 SETS OF QUESTIONS YOU WILL ANSWER. Set 1: a. Compare and contrast: What are the similarities and differences of finding the volume of a cube and a rectangular prism? (U) b. Pretend you are a teacher how would you teach your students to find the volume of a rectangular prism? (I) Set 2: a. Turn your paper over and tell the formula for finding a rectangular prism and for a cube. (M) b. What word would you use to describe your feelings about finding volume? (I)

Finding the volume of a triangular prism.

Let’s find the volume of this triangular prism.

Now let’s find the volume of this triangular prism?

STOP AND QUIZ YOURSELF! Set 1: Turn and Talk to Your Partner: CHOOSE WHICH OF THE 2 SETS OF QUESTIONS YOU WILL ANSWER. Set 1: a. Which figure is the hardest to find the volume? Why? (I) b. What are the most important facts that you learned today? (M) Set 2: a. Write a short poem about finding the volume of a triangular prism. (SE) b. Create 5 flash cards to help you study key concepts that you learned today. (U)

Synthesis Activity 1. Describe how you would find the volume of this cereal box? 2. Solve the problem. Show you work on your handout.
