Physical Education Licensure talk Oct 14, 2016, 10:30 a.m. 121A Freer Hall

COTE introduction Oversee all things related to licensure Past – Criminal Background Checks and Bloodborne Pathogen training, etc. Here today to talk about process of actually getting licensed.

Obtain license as soon as you can Obtain license as soon as you can!!!!-regardless of other plans (grad school, Peace Corp, etc). Not protected against ISBE changes Example: middle grade endorsements must be completed by end of Jan 2018 (unless you go through an approved middle grade program) Other state certification will likely hinge on Illinois licensure first.

Applying for licensure (with CoTE): Log onto your student portal (www.cote.illinois.edu) Example: blutarsky (Bluto) Click on “Licensure Application” Will ask if your are registered for or previously done student teaching. If you have to answer no, Please do not proceed. If yes, click yes and then click “submit” Click on “Click here to add a request” Email address-Recommend you use your most often used/reliable email address. Don’t use your UIUC account as it will go away.

Major (should default to correct program) Cell phone number Degree type Degree period Major (should default to correct program) License (should default to correct license type) Endorsements Click on “click here to add an endorsement” Select any endorsements you wish to be considered for May request as many as you wish to be considered for (but please have mercy on me and use some common sense)

You will all be endorsed in Physical Education (K-12). You don’t have to request that one. To teach any other subject (besides PE) at the middle grade, you must complete the middle grade coursework and meet the content requirements for the endorsement. H.S. Health Education endorsement requires 24 hours of coursework, 12 hours at the 300+ level, and pass the ICTS content test in Health Education

Must click on “submit” Comments Opportunity to provide other important information regarding endorsements such as pending transfer coursework, tests, etc. Signature (must “sign” stating you understand) (click check mark to the side) Must click on “submit” Once you submit, you can’t go back. Contact us if you need to modify/correct something. Don’t try to modify your existing application!

The next day, you should receive an email which says the COTE has received your application. Eventually I will complete an audit based on DARS report (which YOU should also run) or your graduate audit (if you are a grad student) Problems? I will either contact you or records officer. If contacted, it’s important you respond.

If everything appears to be on track, I’ll put application in pending file until end of the final term. Additional endorsements (besides Physical education)? We will send Endorsement email to address you put on form. Contact us if something is inaccurate or missing.

End of final semester processing. Early Field Experience hours (require at least 80). (you should check Student portal for accuracy) Approved Student Teaching Time Reports (one for each placement) Be accurate and fairly descriptive. It is the only record we will have of your Student teaching (directions on student portal). Safety Training Mandated Reporter Training acknowledgement

Departmental Recommendation Should come automatically from Kinesiology Dept if you meet all responsibilities Tests Physical Education Content test (prior to student teaching) EdTPA Grades Degree (must appear on transcripts!!!) Spring graduates (late May or June 2017) If you plan to take a summer job, contact your records officer to request your degree appear on the very first degree post Summer grads (August, 2017) Contact your records officer to request your degree appear on the first degree post .

Recommending you to ISBE: We will contact you at email address you provided. We will provide a link to ISBE website where you will go to claim your license. Follow steps. (Tutorial can be found here): https://vimeo.com/180605529 Be sure your credentials appear correct AND complete before finishing. If not, contact me. Be prepared to pay by credit card (in the “make payment” area).

Registration You must register your license in some district in order for it to be “valid” After you claim your license (i.e., after it has been “Issued”) go back to your home page Register it in the “Action Center” on the right hand side ISBE is supposed to send an email to remind you. Registration can be the district where you have a job or, if you don’t yet have a job, where you live or permanent address (you can move it later) Cost is 10 dollars per fiscal year (5 years assessed all at once). Payment will be at end. If you don’t register it, after 6 months it will lapse.

ISBE no longer provides paper copies of license Proof of licensure: ISBE no longer provides paper copies of license Will need to copy and paste your credentials (from ELIS) onto a word document and print that or Anyone can go into ELIS/Educator credentials, go into “Public Search” and, using your first and last name, verify your credentials

TESTING (more information) Health Education (142) Required for the H.S. Health Ed endorsement All high school endorsements and foreign language endorsements (with the exception of ESL) require a test. Be sure you request test scores be sent to Illinois Be sure your SSN is accurate (errors may delay licensure). Retain your test scores forever (or longer). You may need them later. You can request scores from the testing website (for a fee).

Licensure in other states Useful information Renewing your license. Important! -Don’t let your license lapse (you’ll either have to take courses or pay a fee to renew it). Can renew online through ISBE website (same site where you will claim your license). ISBE SHOULD remind you at the email address you’ve provided to them-but don’t rely on it. Don’t rely on your school to tell you either. Licensure in other states Likely will require licensure in Illinois first Other states may have program verification form. Send form to COTE to fill out. Contact information is on our website under “Links” in www.cote.illinois.edu Teacher.org (www.teacher.org) U.S. Teacher Certification Offices (contact information) If you ask us about licensure in other states, this is where you’ll likely be referred.

Changes Certificate is now a “Professional Educator License” Some applications/schools still insist upon using “antiquated” terminology and if so, you would put that you will (or have) receive(d) an “initial Type-10 certificate” As mentioned before, you would have until end of January 2018 to add the middle grade (5-8) health education endorsement.
