Peace Romans 5:1-11
What is Peace? Is it a state of tranquility or quiet? Is it freedom from civil disturbance? Is it a state of security or order within a community? Or is it freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions? Harmony in personal relations? Is it a state or period of mutual concord between governments? Or is it a greeting or farewell?
Peace Peace is actually all of those things. But, when it comes to a peace that is lasting and founded in a hope that will not disappoint (or put us to shame) we must look to the peace that can only be found in God!
Peace requires reconciliation and sacrifice. Reconciliation is the process of removing whatever obstacle that has caused division between two people, parties, or countries…etc. and bringing them back into harmony with each other. And for reconciliation to happen there must be forgiveness and sacrifice.
Romans 5:10, “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son,” At some point in time the people whom Paul was writing to were enemies of God. Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God,”
Therefore, those who are not Christians are enemies of God and subject to His wrath. But, our gracious God (who is the offended party), in our relationship between Him and us, loves us so much that He made a way for us to be reconciled (brought back into harmony) to Him.
Romans 4:25-5:2, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.” Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”—Romans 5:8 Let us put that into perspective… Jesus is our peace. Ephesians 2:14, “For he himself is our peace…”
Peace requires submission and trust. Romans 5:1, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God…” faith requires submissive action on our part to bring us to peace with God.
We must maintain our peace with God through the everyday battles we face. Romans 5:2b-3, “And we boast in the hope of the glory of God suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
Ephesians 4:3, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” In this verse we are told to maintain peace in the church. In other scriptures we are told to maintain peace in the family and in our individual relationships. I Corinthians 7:12-16 Hebrews 12:14
