FILLER SLAB

Introduction This is an ancient time technology which saves material and labour cost. Filler slab consume less concrete and steel as compared to conventional RCC slabs. RCC roofs becomes lighters and looks more beautiful due to use of less-heavy, low cost filler material such as mangalore tiles, clay pots and broken pieces of cement blocks.

The slab filled with lighter filler material is known as filler slab. By reducing the quantity and weight of material the roof become less expensive yet retains the strength of conventional slab. The most popular filler material is the roofing slab.

Method Mangalore tiles are placed between steel ribs and concrete is poured into the gap to make a filler slab. The structure requires less steel and cement. It is also a good heat insulator.

The materials are laid in the grid of steel reinforcement rods(6mm to 8 mm dia.) and concreting is done over them. The concrete mix used is 1:2:4 The grid size depends upon the design, span & material used. For mangalore tiles (size:23cm*40cm), the grid size is 33cm*50cm. The slab thickness is 10 cm.

ADVANTAGES It consumes less concrete and steel due to reduced weight of slab by the introduction of a less heavy , low cost filler material like two layers of burnt clay tiles Slab thickness minimum 112.5 mm It enhances thermal comfort inside the building due to heat resistant qualities of filler materials and the gap between two burnt clay tiles Makes saving on cost of this slab compared to traditional slab by about 20% It reduces use of concrete and saves cement and steel by about 40%

This technique also reduces the unwanted dead load of roofing . Compare to other roofing systems, it is thermally comfortable and has no health hazards . Galvanized iron and asbestos cement sheet roofs dissipate too much heat and are difficult to live under.
