Using text structure When you look at the text structure of a text, you can find the big ideas and see how to organize a summary. Chronological Order/Sequence Description Compare and Contrast Cause and Effect Problem/Solution

Sequence Text Structure The author lists items or events in numerical or chronological (time) order. Describes the order of events or how to do or make something.

Sequence Text Structure-Summary Questions What sequence of events is being described? What are the major events or incidents that occur? What are the steps, directions, or procedures to follow (what must be done first, second, etc.)? What is the beginning event? What other events or steps are included? Sequence Passage-Example The Gainesville City Zoo just received three new animals. The first animal it received was a deer. A monkey was its second animal to join the zoo. The third animal it received was a lion. The last animal to arrive was a cheetah. Children in Gainesville are excited about the opening of the zoo! We do together as a whole class.

Sequence Passage-Example Bill does the same thing every morning to get ready for school. First, he gets out of bed. Next, he gets dressed. Then, he goes downstairs and eats breakfast. After breakfast, he brushes his teeth. Not long after those two things are done, he makes his lunch. Finally, he gets on the bus and goes to school. Students read together with their groups aloud and discuss what details they would “map” out (write responses on board).

Pair Examples Each pair will get a different example. Read through the paragraph (DO NOT WRITE ON THIS COPY, PLEASE). Look over the questions on the yellow half sheet. Answer the questions for your paragraph, including the multiple choice (put this answer on your yellow sheet as well). Be prepared to share your responses with the class! 

Pair Examples #1: Sam repaired the leaky roof on the old schoolhouse. During the week it took Sam to repair the roof, he became friends with Miss Katherine, the schoolteacher. She was surprised at Sam's love of poetry. Meanwhile Sam took on other repair jobs at the schoolhouse including repairing the windows, fixing the wobbly desk, and hanging the door straight. After each repair, Sam was rewarded with jars of spiced peaches. By the end of the first semester, Sam had the schoolhouse looking new.

Next Trout and Linda dragged Kate all over the dried up lake in her bare feet demanding she tell them where the loot was buried. Suddenly Kate was bitten by a lizard. Her last words were, "Start digging." Kate died laughing.

Pair Example #4: Follow these simple directions to make a wonderful onion dip. First combine 8 ounces of cream cheese with 1/4 cup whipping cream in a crockpot. Heat these ingredients until the cheese melts. This takes about 30 to 60 minutes. While the cheese is heating, steam three large Vandalia onions. Add the onions to the cheese mixture. Next add 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt, 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon thyme to the cheese mixture and stir well. Then place a lid on the crockpot, and continue heating for approximately 30 minutes. Finally serve the onion dip with raw vegetables, crackers, or bread pieces.

Text Structure Activity #1 Find ONE example of the following types of text structure: Descriptive Sequence/Chronological Order DO NOT USE THE CLASSIFIEDS OR OTHER ADVERTISEMENT PAGES/FLYERS. After you have found a good example for EACH type, cut it out and glue one on the front side of a piece of computer paper and the other on the back. Label which type it is at the top of each side as well. Under each article, answer the guiding questions #1-4 from the half-sheet on the counter.
