What does a HS counselor do? Course selection/scheduling for students Career counseling, including Career Cruising College and vocational counseling Registration of new students Individual counseling Academic counseling Communication with parents Collaboration with outside agencies as needed Test administration Assist with college applications, recommendations, and scholarships Group counseling

How is high school different? Much bigger school Year in school is determined by credits No teams 6 to 7 classes Teachers organized by subject (departments) Different students in each class More independence and responsibility of student (missing assignments)

Should I Take Honors or Not?? Definition of Honors: “Honors courses are enriched; they offer the same material in greater depth and with a faster pace… Honors courses emphasize critical and independent thinking to produce creative application of ideas… Motivation is the main quality that characterizes an honors student.” (Wikipedia) Examples: Independent reading, 3-4 page essays

Level Changes May request within first 6 weeks of semester When moving down a level, must show interventions have been utilized. Students must fill out form that is provided in counseling office. When moving up a level, teacher recommendation and grade are considered. Courses with different levels: English Biology Math
