New task within PT Support Activities “Support of COSMO licensees” Dr. Gheorghe STANCALIE, Cosmin BARBU National Meteorological Administration of Romania
STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Outline: Initial task proposal for COSMO GM 2011 Goal, description, work plan, … Actual task proposal for COSMO GM 2011 Motivation Main issues of the subtasks Costs & Benefits
Initial proposal – TIPCO PT STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Initial proposal – TIPCO PT (Testing ICON Physics package into COSMO Model ) was planned to start in September 2011, but was canceled because of the delayed availability of the ICON physics packages for COSMO Goal: to evaluate and test the ICON physics packages in different COSMO setups using a few model versions / namelist switches agreed by everyone, running and verifying COSMO over Romania. Aims & Motivation: looking at the COSMO behaviour when using the ICON physics packages, by running experiments and verifying the results on a selected period of time for the Romanian territory. The necessary adaptations of COSMO to use the ICON physics packages are done by in the priority project POMPA. TIPCO PT serves as a first test of the suitability of the ICON physical parametrizations for COSMO.
Initial proposal – TIPCO PT STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Initial proposal – TIPCO PT Work plan: Task 1. Model Setup: 1.0. Adapt COSMO (especially the data structure) to the ICON physics package 1.1. Delivery of the new version of the COSMO model with the ported ICON physics packages to Romania and choice of the different parametrisations to be tested 1.2. Providing the necessary namelists configurations by each of the participating members and adapting for the Romanian territory Task 2. Test experiments for ICON physics package: 2.1. Deciding the period of time for which the model will be run. (selected cases) 2.2. Running the COSMO model for each of the selected configurations. Task 3. Evaluation for the forecast of COSMO with ICON physics package: 3.1. Deciding the parameters to be evaluated and the verification tool to be used (VERSUS) 3.2. Uploading the forecast results for each of the tested configurations in VERSUS 3.3. Uploading the required observations in VERSUS 3.4. Configuring and running verifications 3.5. Plotting the results 3.6. Evaluating the results Task 4. Write final report and present results at COSMO General Meeting
Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” Motivation: in 2011/2012, DWD expects the migration of about 25 operational HRM users to the COSMO model Please, note the email below to the HRM users!!
Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” The HRM users location:
Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” Main issues of the sub-task: Support of new COSMO users during the implementation phase via e-mail and by remote access to their computer systems (if necessary) Support of new COSMO users in setting up their operational COSMO model suite(s) Training new scientific users during the annual "COSMO User Training" in February in Langen, Germany Training new operational COSMO model users during the annual "Capacity Building in Regional Modelling“ in Langen, Germany Creating a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for COSMO model installation issues Implementation of standardized error messages in the COSMO model (under guidance by U. Schaettler)
Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” Costs: new FTE allocation (could be dynamical, depending on COSMO customers ) costs for organizing training sessions (NMA could organize (if it will be necessary) some extra-workshops in Romania) Benefits: 20.000 € / year for some new COSMO users => must cover the costs increasing of the COSMO visibility all over the world
Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” STC meeting, Rome, August the 24th 2011 Actual proposal – “Support of COSMO licensees” The expected COSMO world users for 2012-2013
