Operation Cobra – Breakout from Normandy Though the allies had managed to take the beaches, they were stopped from really moving forward by the Germans. General Patton arrives and breaks out of the pocket during Operation Cobra. Germans begin to flee in every direction as the allies advance so fast their supplies have a hard time keeping up.

Operation Market Garden September 17 – 27, 1944. British strategy to capture the Rhine River, thereby the allies could sweep down on the German factories, possibly winning the war before Christmas. American and British airborne units drop to capture key bridges. However, the British airborne division drops on 2 SS Panzer divisions, not good for them. Ends in disaster, many men killed. Gives the Germans a morale boost.

The Battle of the Bulge December 16, 1944 – January 25 1945. Germans launch a massive offensive. Allies did not expect it, and many were captured.

The Battle of the Bulge Weather conditions were bad, so the allied air force, which had prevented any major successes by the Germans, were grounded. However, the allies fought back against massive odds. The 101st U.S. airborne division was surrounded, but fought off the Germans. General Patton’s 3rd army, which was further south, was able to turn around and defeat the Germans.

The Battle for Berlin April 16th, 1945 – May 9th, 1945. Soviet forces fight the Germans in Berlin. On April 30th, Hitler commits suicide in his Bunker.

V-E Day Victory in Europe On May 8th, the Germans surrender to the Americans, British and French. Technically it was on the night of the 7th, but negotiations lasted until the 8th. On May 9th, the Germans surrender to the Soviets. War in Europe is over.

On a separate Sheet of Paper Title: After the War. Now that the allies have defeated Germany, the world will be forever at peace, right? Just by looking at the maps, what do you think our next section in history will be about?
