World Religions When studying world history, it is important to study world religions. Many countries’ history, government, and culture originated from their religion. We will be studying these religions from a historical perspective. Do not make judgements! Be open minded! The five most popular religions around the world: Christianity - Hinduism Judaism - Islam Buddhism

World Religions Graphic Organizer To learn more about the five most popular world religions, you are going to complete a graphic organizer. This will be your notes for the section. We will complete Judaism together as an example. Then, you will work with a partner to fill in the Christianity section. For homework, you will read about Islam. During block 2, you will study Hinduism and Buddhism.

We’ve already studied the background of Judaism (Israelites) & Christianity (Romans) – let’s do these first!

Judaism

Judaism 101 Follow along with the video and complete the section on beliefs, rituals and practices. Be ready to discuss! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ax7a1TdYTA

Christianity Right now you and a partner will work together to complete the “Christianity” portion of the graphic organizer. Use your bellwork, “characteristics of Christianity” (pg. 76), and the Christianity packet to complete it. This needs to be finished by the end of class!

Christianity

BELLWORK 10/5: Islam Who was Muhammad? What led to his creation of Islam? Describe the Five Pillars of Islam. Explain the two sects of Islam. THINKER: What are some current misconceptions about Islam? Why do those inaccuracies exist? How can we prevent stereotyping all Muslims? Explain!

Crash Course History: Islam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpcbfxtdoI8 Stop at 4:50 (after thought buble) Start at 11:10 (importance of Islam in world history)

Islam

Myths about Islam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SInvcvpbaQQ THINKER: What are some current misconceptions about Islam? Why do those inaccuracies exist? How can we prevent stereotyping all Muslims? Explain!

BELLWORK: Block 2 Which two religions originated in India? List three similarities between the monotheistic religions. Why do you think Buddhism is considered a “philosophy” and not a religion? Where in the world are the three monotheistic religions currently practiced? THINKER: Why do we study world religions in history class?

Hinduism

Buddhism

Closure - Review How is Buddhism different than the other four religions? What do Hinduism and Buddhism have in common? Throughout history, religions are continuously persecuted by people in power. Why do you think this is? Why aren’t people more accepting of different religions? Explain!

Jigsaw Instructions Then, you will be broken into groups of three. Once in your group, number off 1-3. Each group member will be responsible for a different religion. Next, you will independently complete your own section. Once everyone is done, your group will come back together and you will teach the rest of your group about your religion. As you teach, they will fill in the rest of the worksheet. Make sure you understand your religion since you will be the only one teaching it in your group. 1 – Buddhism 2 – Islam 3 - Hinduism
