Types of Maps Grade 5 Social

What is a map? A map is a representation of a part of the Earth. Maps are pictures that represent or show what a part of the Earth looks like.

Maps A cartographer is a map maker. Cartographers were important in the past because they traveled around making maps. They drew what they thought the land looked like. Today, maps are made from satellite images, by cartographer. Satellites orbit the Earth and take pictures.

What are maps used for? Maps are used to show what the land looks like on the Earth Maps are used to help people navigate, find directions and know where they are going. Maps are used to define property, borders and ownership of land.

Types of Maps A political map shows the boundaries of countries, states, provinces, etc.

Types of Maps A physical map shows what the land looks like.

Types of Maps A population map shows where the people live in an area and how they are distributed.

Topographic Shows the elevations of the land and is a satellite image of the land.
