How to Align Course SLOs to Program SLOs support guidance tools

LAVC Program SLOs & Pathways Program SLOs represent skills and concepts students will learn related to a specific discipline upon completion of a degree or certificate. These outcomes cut across the different courses in the program. A typical program may have 2 to 4 program outcomes. Foundational Career-Technical Education GE/Transfer Communication Skills Reasoning Skills Academic Habits of Mind Professional Behavior Social Responsibility & Personal Development Technical Skills Global Awareness

Snapshot of Program SLOs from Cycle 1   Program SLO: Communication Skills Program SLO: Reasoning Skills Program SLO: Professional Behavior Program SLO: Technical Skills Market 001 Principles of Selling M Market 011 Fundamentals of Advertising m Market 021 Market 031 Retail Merchandising

New and Improved Way Benefits with eLumen Mapping: Takes the data you already entered at the course-level and reuses that data at the program-level Allows for overall program assessment and progress Allows for disaggregation of data required by QFE #1 Will support prioritization of funding requests Much quicker than old way 

Things to Consider Not every Course SLO needs to align with a Program SLO but… At least one Course SLO needs to align with a Program SLO HOW does the assessment of the Course SLO align specifically with a Program SLO? More mapping is not necessarily better and could lead to dirty data

Aligning Outcomes Example 1 Choose PSLO & Pathway Choose Assessment Program Pathway: Career Technical Education Program SLO: Communication Skills – Students will be able to clearly communicate through writing, speaking, listening, and reading. Respiratory Therapy 005 Course SLO: Demonstrate clear communication skills in clinical setting by giving a clear and concise report of the patient status. Assessment: RT 005 Clinical Evaluation

Aligning Outcomes Example 2 Choose PSLO & Pathway Choose Assessment Program Pathway: GE/Transfer Program SLO: Reasoning Skills – Students will be able to ask appropriate questions, collect accurate information, evaluate its quality, and reflectively and creatively analyze, synthesize, and organize the information. As a result, students will be able to reason logically and come to reliable conclusions which will enable them to successfully navigate the world around them. Music 202 Course SLO #2: Analyze intermediate modulating music in four parts. Assessment: Music 202 Final Exam

More Examples of Alignment Is it a part of the curriculum? Do students have the opportunity to practice it? Do you assess it and give students feedback on their performance? Does it align? I give students reading assignments in my photo class. Yes, students are required to do the reading in my class. Yes, students do the reading before they come to class and we discuss it. Students have to do the readings before they take a test that assesses whether they did the reading or not. NO I teach students reading strategies specific to reading art theory texts in my photo class. Yes, I teach students the reading strategies in the course. Yes, students practice the reading strategies in class and then they apply them independently at home. Yes, I assess students' application of the reading strategies and give them feedback on it. YES

Log into elumen. Choose area from drop down in upper right hand corner Log into elumen. Choose area from drop down in upper right hand corner. Select SLOs and Assessments. Select Curriculum map. This is the page you will now see.

Check on arrow next to Core PSLOs for drop down menu Check on arrow next to Core PSLOs for drop down menu. You will see Core PSLOs selected. You will want to select your area; for example Career Technical Education Program pathway outcome.

Notice that CTE now shows up in the drop down menu Notice that CTE now shows up in the drop down menu. If you click on All categories, you will see this menu. Please leave it with the all categories selection.

You will now see the Course SLOs on the left hand side You will now see the Course SLOs on the left hand side. You can hover the cursor over the SLO to read all of it.

Now you can align your PSLOs to the CSLOs by checking the appropriate box. Please make sure to check the white areas. If the blue area boxes are checked, they will not collect data.

You can see on this example that you can have more than one CSLO matching to a PSLO.
