Objective For Participants to become familiar with the focus and goals of the Department of Equity and Race Relations. Facilitator reads the Objective. “I was told that this group was interested in what we were doing as a school district around Racial Equity, and particularly what the new department is doing.”

Superintendent’s Cabinet/Principals Institutional Equity Teachers: Sue and Sue/4Rs Superintendent’s Cabinet/Principals Strategic Plan Board Policy #0030 FRAN talks about the Frameworks our department is working from.

The Department of Equity and Race Relations 2014 Established by the Superintendent – January of 2014 – to implement: Policy #0030 Part D -“Professional Development – The district shall provide professional development to strengthen employees’ knowledge and skills for eliminating the opportunity gaps and other disparities in achievement.” In alignment with the Strategic Plan: Mission: “…ensuring equitable access, closing achievement gaps and excellence in education for every student.” Goal 1, Part B: “Elevate professional practice by investing in effective, culturally responsive teachers, staff and leaders.” Explore Policy #0030 F asks Students to get out this policy. See Part D F “I will leave these with you to read on your own, but know that our department is focused on PD for the 6,000 staff which includes 3,000 teachers in Seattle Public Schools.

Equity vs Equality Facilitator: “As we think about the goals of the policy and the strategic plan, we must understand equity. What do you notice?? How might this relate to our work as an educational institution? popcorn Our work as a Department is to create educational equity in Seattle Public Schools.

Cultural Proficiency adapted from Sue and Sue Awareness: Actively in the process of becoming aware of our own assumptions and biases. Knowledge: Actively attempt to learn about and understand the worldview of cultures different from our own. Skills: Actively engage in cross-cultural communication and Culturally Responsive Instruction. Action/Advocacy: Advocating on behalf of the needs of clients, families, community and colleagues. Facilitator reads these and gives some context.

FEAT Family Engagement Action Teams Family Engagement Action teams are school-based teams that are comprised of families, school staff, and community members. Each FEAT uses data and the Continued School Improvement Plan (CSIP) to plan and support family engagement strategies at their school.

Our Work so Far   SLI presentation from john powell and focus on African American male scholars. SPS Cabinet – 4 two hour sessions with Gary Howard Work sessions and planning with PSESD (Melia LaCour) and The National Equity Project (Tom Malarkey). Creation of a Brochure Creation of a Racial Analysis Tool, Facilitators Guide, and Training module. Creation of Think Tank for African American Male Scholars 3 listening sessions at JSCEE to hear from staff all over the district about what they saw as a priority for our team.

Our Work so Far (Cont.) Development and facilitation of PD since August 2014: STAR Mentors: 2 Sessions focused on Culturally Responsive Instruction, micro-aggressions and mentoring. Nurses: Focus on Disparities in Health care and institutional racism. Gatzert all Staff: Focus – Cultural Cues: What our parents want us to know. Orca K-8: All Staff – Focus: “Racial Identity.” City Year: Complete Cadre: Institutional racism, Racial Identity and micro-aggressions.
