White Rhinoceros

Where are White Rhinos from? They come from Africa where they live on Africa's grassy plains, where they sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen individuals. Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block.

How did the white rhino gets its name? ‘white rhino’ is that the name comes from the wide lip of the species. The white rhino has a long white lip. The black rhino has a smaller, curved lip. According to the popular telling, the early Dutch settlers appended the word ‘wijd’ to its name, meaning ‘wide’. This was anglicised as ‘white’. The irony of the thing is that the Afrikaans name is now ‘wit renoster’ or ‘white rhinoceros’.

How big is a Rhino? Type: Mammal Diet: Herbivore Size: Head and body, 11 to 13.75 ft (3.4 to 4.2 m); Tail, 20 to 27.5 in (50 to 70 cm) Weight: 3,168 to 7,920 lbs (1,440 to 3,600 kg) Protection status: Endangered Size relative to a 6-ft (2-m) man:

How do Rhinos live in their environment? Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape. The white rhino once roamed much of sub- Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.

What kind of food to they eat? A White Rhino eats different types of foliage (leaves) to grow its big, bulky body. The White Rhino uses its square-shaped lips to grab grass in small places.   This is another reason why a White Rhino will be found on plains or savannas . If you thought White Rhinos get to be big and strong by eating meat, think again, White Rhinos are herbivores .

How do they protect themselves? White rhinos have two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year, and have been known to grow up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers. The white Rhino has no natural predators, despite its size and how it gets angry very easily, it is very easy for man to kill. The white rhino is usually ambushed right in the water hole. Humans are involved by hunting down rhinoceros, while other humans are trying to protect them.

Why are people killing rhinos and taking their horns? Many believe contain aphrodisiac qualities besides being used as medicines for curing fever, stomach ailments and other diseases. Rhino horn is also much fancied by buyers from the Middle East who turn them into handles of ornamental daggers. Profits from the illegal rhino horn trade are staggering - rhino horn sells for up to Rs 1.5 million ($35,000) per kg in the international market.

What age does a female Rhino mate? Sexual maturity is reached from 5–7 years old for females, and 7– 8 years for males.

How do rhinos mate? Mating does not have a seasonal pattern, but births tend to be towards the end of the rainy season in drier environments. Males and females frequently fight during courtship, sometimes leading to serious wounds inflicted by their horns. After mating, the pair go their separate ways. A calf is born 14 to 18 months later. Although they nurse for a year, calves are able to begin eating vegetation one week after birth.

Does the mother stay with here baby after birth? The mother and calf stay together for 2–3 years until the next calf is born; female calves may stay longer, forming small groups. The young are occasionally taken by hyenas and lions. Rhinos are wonderful parents. They care about them and protect them and teach them for the years it takes them to grow up.

How do Rhinos defend there babies? They form a circle to protect there calves Rhinos are wonderful parents. They care about them and protect them and teach them for the years it takes them to grow up.

How fast can a rhino run? A African rhino can reach A speed of 56 kph- 34.8miles per hour. That’s as fast as a galloping horse .

Why do birds sit on rhinos? "The rhino's guard." The bird eats ticks it finds on the rhino and noisily warns of danger. Although the birds also eat blood from sores on the rhino's skin and thus obstruct healing, they are still tolerated. The birds also eat the insects the rhinos stir up when they graze.

How does a rhino show its territory? Rhino territory is well marked with trails bordered with urine and piles of dung.

What do rhinos do if they smell us? They well charge at you full on and you well be sorry

What behaviors does the white rhino have to help it survive? The white rhino charges at his enemies
