Reading Comprehension Check RCC: Lake Washington Please explain the final solution to the problem at Lake Washington. Was the pollution problem eliminated? Explain. Describe why the people finally stepped up and work together.

Bell work Library books are more likely to get damaged and mistreated than others. Please explain WHY library books are more likely to get beat up.

Earth is a Closed System Earth is a closed system – meaning we have limited resources & increased accumulation of wastes. Local Regional GLOBAL EVERYONES PROBLEM What current env. problem is a good example of this?

POPULATION GROWTH Explain how population growth increases environmental problems. More people = more stuff = more environmental impact

Other Main Environmental Problems Natural resource depletion What is it, how is it affecting earth, how do we stop or slow it? Pollution - What is it, how is it affecting earth, how do we stop or slow it? Loss of Biodiversity

Lake Washington Please read pg. 13 Case Study on Lake Washington: An Environmental Success Story. In 10 or less sentences please summarize the case study…member A writes Answer critical thinking questions ... member B writes Turn in work w/ both names on paper at the end of class today. Reading comprehension check tomorrow

Lake Washington Cities in Washington near the large freshwater Lake Washington had been disposing of their treated sewage in the lake since the 40’s. Oscillatoria Rubescens was found in 1955 O. Rubescens is an indicator bacteria, and without action, research has shown, that the lake would soon degrade to foul, smelly water that couldn’t support life. The cities worked together to re-route sewage lines to dispose of the waste in Puget Sound where it is more diluted and less of an environmental problem.

Puget Sound

Reading Comprehension Check What was the initial observation at Lake Washington? Explain the importance of an ‘indicator species’. Please explain Dr. Edmonson’s hypothesis regarding Lake Washington. Explain how the people solved the problem. Describe how Earth is a closed system .
