Utilization of license metrics for VMware To address customer request regarding calculation of licence unitization for the most popular non- IBM business software, we introduced calculation of VMware license utilization. The feature allows tracking VMware license utilization on the Resource Utilization panel. Leveraging automatic bundling when a part number is not defined in the IBM Catalog The feature allows assign customer part numbers to products defined in Catalog.

Corporation where James role is SAM, recently acquired small, but important company located abroad. For security reasons its IT infrastructure can not be connected to the main company network. New acquisition has expensive Oracle software which needs to be reviewed for license complaince, cost optimization and security purposes. 1/23/2018 James' tasks: In addition to standard reports which James has been producing for core part of his company, he needs to make visible information regarding software inventory and license use for the new acquisition which is not connected to the BigFix server. Solution: James will use disconnected scans solution for Windows and for Linux to provide the discovery data from endpoints which can not be connected to BigFix server.

1/23/2018 How James, Software Asset Manager, can trace VMware license utilization in BigFix Inventory. James' tasks: Provide the number of licenses needed for VMware instances installed in company IT environment, to be compliant with license agreement. James can collect this information from multiple VMware, so James cooperates with VMware administrators to collect this information periodically. James would like to see VMware license utilization data in single point. Solution: BFI allows to collect information about VMware licenses utilization and trace this data from all infrastructure on Resource Utilization panel in BigFix Inventory.

Limitation ESXBox vs VirtualCenter Two options: Overscanning Shared license The ESX is being scanned second time, first during scan of whole vCenter and second during scan of ESX. The same license is shared between multiple vSphere instances.

1/23/2018 How James, Software Asset Manager, can improve software classification for non public part numbers in BigFix Inventory. James' tasks: Perform software classification for all discovered components, according to license agreement. Jim likes classification automation base on part numbers, however Jim can not leverage this feature for part numbers not covered in Catalog. Solution: BigFix Inventory provides the option to assign part numbers to products defined in Catalog. Jim can update Catalog with part numbers from his contract, then perform “Part numbers upload” and “Data imports” operations. This actions allow Jim use software classification automation for his part numbers in the same way as for the one delivered in Catalog.
