1.2 Classifying numbers

Review Classifying numbers Counting numbers: 1,2,3,4….. NOT 0 Whole numbers: Positive numbers 0, 1,2,3,4,5….. Integers: Positives and opposites -3, -2, -1, 0 , 1, 2, 3 Rational numbers: Fractions and decimals *repeating and terminating decimals

Repeating and terminating decimals Repeating decimal – always repeats the same numbers over and over Ex. .45454545 .333333 .216521652165 Terminating Decimal – stops Ex. .5 .15 .825

What do you notice about the digits after the decimal point in the decimal forms of the fractions? Are all of these rational numbers? Consider the decimal -.101001000100001000001….. Do you think this decimal represents a rational number? Why or why not? Do you think a negative sign affects whether or not a number is a rational number? For example - Rational or not rational? Is a mixed number a rational number?

Classify your number in the correct category Rational Numbers Classify your number in the correct category

True or False All integers are rational numbers. True All integers are whole numbers. False Some rational numbers are integers

Which set of numbers describes the situation? The number of bills in a person’s wallet Temperatures The number of students in a school Amount of money in a bank account
