Spine Rehabilitation

Why can’t we all be this flexible?

What are the factors that affect each individuals’ flexibility?????

Factors that affect Flexibility Joint Structure Age Sex Connective Tissue (tendons, ligaments, & joint capsules, skin tightness, scar tissue) Muscle Bulk Obesity Activity Level Genetics

WHY DO TIGHT HAMSTRINGS CAUSE BACK PAIN THEN?

ANSWER = TUG OF WAR

Tight Hamstrings Pull on Ischial Tuberosity (the bottom of the pelvis) Causes a Rotated Pelvis Back muscles are attached to the butterfly wings of the ilium (top of the pelvis) The Rotated Pelvis then pulls on the back muscles, which causes pain and spasm! Therefore, the pelvis is in the middle of the tug of war!

How Flexible Should the Hamstrings Be? MEASURE YOUR PARTNERS HAMSTRING FLEXIBILITY SUPINE, STRAIGHT LEG RAISE STARTS AT 0 DEGREES, MOVES UP TO APPROX. 75 TO 100 DEGREES

90 DEGREES

How does this Affect the Sciatic Nerve??

Sciatic Tape Measure Lab Make Sciatic Nerve on partner Look at tension with passive hip flexion Release tension with knee flexion

How is this affecting the Sciatic Nerve???? THINK! How is this affecting the Sciatic Nerve????
