Automated Monitoring and Warning Systems Presented by Mark Johnston – PIMS Group Principal Engineer Dave Dowell – PITS Engineering Manager Introduction Jason – Background – Project manager Corey Background – Commercial Manager Mark – Background Principal Engineer NGC persons present Safety Contact

Introduction Formation of System Intent of system Control Effectiveness Complexity's in UG Coal and compliance Components of the system Use and application of system Adaptability of system Future developments

Formation of System Partnership between: PIMS Group (PIMS Consulting) PI Technical Services (PITS) Unimon (51% Owned by PIMS Group) Combining the technical excellence of each company to produce a independent, cutting edge, client-focused, flexible solution Jason Best Contractor Safety record No LTIs in 8 years Current TRIFR 2.04 2014 Historical rolling since 0.89

Intent of System To provide an integrated, cost effective, flexible, real time monitoring system to manage strata, ventilation and principal hazards Risk management tool to increase detection of changing environments, shorten response time and information data collection. Jason Best Contractor Safety record No LTIs in 8 years Current TRIFR 2.04 2014 Historical rolling since 0.89

Intent of System Achieved by Using off the shelf compliant products which are adaptable to provide other solutions Using existing site communications, and use the mines IT and reporting systems Minimising cost for installation, commissioning and post maintenance of the system Shorter time from data collection to reporting and response Jason Best Contractor Safety record No LTIs in 8 years Current TRIFR 2.04 2014 Historical rolling since 0.89

Control Effectiveness Human Inspections Can be inadequate and unreliable in areas such as inbye Longwalls, Tailgates, face roads and returns. UNIMON Adequate accurate real time data monitoring Reliable data with built in safety precautions for high movement areas and system faults Can have embedded TARPS to have predetermined responses to triggers Jason Best Contractor Safety record No LTIs in 8 years Current TRIFR 2.04 2014 Historical rolling since 0.89

Complexities in UG Coal Environment Utilise a sensor (Gel, retrofit Tell Tale Mechanical) installed in the roof or rib, or on a support unit to monitor strata or support behaviour. Enable underground personnel to detect the potential for failure and respond appropriately as opposed to a ERZ Controller inspection. Provide the Geotechnical Engineer with real time information and history on the effectiveness of the support installed Injuries – Zac Grey Cut to forearm from roof Mesh in belt chamber

Complexities in UG Coal Environment In a hard rock or industrial environment technologies are available for each of the sensors using standard instrumentation techniques. Each sensor solution has its own challenges and considerations as to reliability and accuracy. In a Coal Mining Situation these solutions are more complex because of the need to operate within a potentially hazardous zone. Injuries – Zac Grey Cut to forearm from roof Mesh in belt chamber

Complexities The measuring and data handling system needs to be able to transmit the data with reliable accuracy and speed to ensure correct interpretation of the conditions Contingency for real time monitoring failure to allow in situ measurements (Failsafe) Data can be accessed locally or at any point on the mines IT system Injuries – Zac Grey Cut to forearm from roof Mesh in belt chamber

Complexities System impacts on costs and use for different mine site departments Engineering – infrastructure delivery and maintenance Technical Services – Monitoring and data analysis Production – Risk Management, Hazard identification All want it but want other department to pay for it Injuries – Zac Grey Cut to forearm from roof Mesh in belt chamber

Complexities and Compliance Integration of a complete system that may use three different control techniques IS Distributed I/O systems such as Dupline The information needs to be transmitted to the surface and processed before use Has limited accuracy inflexible PLC Systems which need to be housed in Flameproof Enclosure with limited configurability The information can be conditioned locally for display on other systems The data still needs to be conditioned and transferred to other systems before meaningful data can be displayed Injuries – Zac Grey Cut to forearm from roof Mesh in belt chamber

Complexities Or the Becker IS MMS which is a Smart IS Controller The unit and system is Exia which means it can be used anywhere in the coal mine It is Process Computer which means it can sample, condition and display information locally without other systems It can Transmit the data via Ethernet, Wireless Ethernet or other protocols It can interface directly with the Mines IT and Reporting systems. The system uses a single cable to connect between sensors and the MMS The surface link can use existing the Fibre Optic Backbone installed at the mine Do you want to see an example of the Project Management RA and Action register – Project Management RA Action register Project Management Safety Plan

Integration to Existing Mine Infrastructure The system makes use of “off the shelf” certified equipment System can be built as 1 unit simple system or as a mine wide solution Data received is converted and transferred to open database platform Unimon interface can be built as separate custom front end or as Citect page(s) TARP Triggers set to site requirements and option for offsite notification (via sms or email) Strata monitoring system integrated into control room to alarm to TARPS in same manner as gas alarms

Adaptability of the system The components and open structure of the system allows for a simple bolt on feature to the system to provide expansion with minimal commissioning or capital cost. Options are also available for a operational leasing option to prove the system without committing to capital expenditure.

Future System

Future Developments Prototype for combined mechanical real time tell tale. Fully integrated system with personnel and equipment tagging, communications and environmental monitoring working under one system
