Lesson Objective: Students will be able to describe the history and future of space exploration, including the types of equipment and transportation needed for space travel.

Today’s Agenda: Space Exploration: 1. Past 2. Present 3. Future

The Past: Until the 20th century, space exploration required looking through a telescope.

Telescope: A telescope is an object designed to make distant object appear closer.

Technological advances skyrocketed starting in the 1950s because of the “Space Race”.

The Space Race:

What is a “Satellite”?

Satellites A satellite: a man-made object that orbits a celestial body. Uses: Gathering data (maps and weather), communication (cell phones and television).

Sputnik 1: October 4, 1957 The Soviet Union announces that they have launched a satellite into Earth’s orbit. Sputnik broadcasts a beeping radio signal, and went around Earth once every 90 minutes.

Satellites: Satellites have improved our ability to explore space, forecast the weather, and monitor changes to Earth’s surface.

Space Probes: A space probe is an unmanned space craft that leaves Earth’s orbit and explores space. The first space probe was called Pioneer 1 and was sent by the US in 1958.

Space Probes: Pioneer 10 in 1972 was the first man-made object to travel through the asteroid belt. The Voyager 2 probe was launched in 1977 and travelled past Jupiter in 1979 and past Uranus in 1986.

What is NASA?

NASA: In 1958 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded. NASA’s space program decides what equipment, accommodations, and transportation are needed for space exploration . Since space is a cold, airless vacuum, NASA scientists equip space shuttles and suits with oxygen supplies.
