Presentation transcript:

Happy FRIDAY! Okay, just go with me. 1. Find a partner. 2. With your right hand, prepare for a thumb-war. 3. While you are engaging in a thumb war, your left hands will simultaneously play continual games of rock-paper-scissors. GO! 

Summarizing strategies Read your article on multitasking. Apply the strategy for summarizing outlined in your book/handout. Be prepared to teach it to your peers.

Summarizing Strategies Graphic overview, compression, sentence summary & post-it clusters

Graphic overview Boxes around important ideas; Arrows to show the relationship between ideas; Label relationships outside of boxes.

Graphic overview: what it looks like Development of technology (cause) NEGATIVES POSITIVES Human dependence More jobs (effect) (effect) Eliminates human Betters economy relationships Gains outweigh benefits: (conclusion) WORTHWHILE ADVANCEMENT

Compression Cross out unnecessary info; Put parentheses around what you can condense; Write simplified words and phrases over parentheses.

Compression: what it looks like Urban schools (Educational institutions in large cities) such as New York and Boston have been criticized for promoting students (passing students from grade to grade) for non-academic reasons (regular attendance and good citizenship and not academics). Original text is in white.

Sentence summary Write a 1-sentence summary of each segment of the article, chapter, etc.; Divide the paper into segments based on similar topics if it is not already divided for you; Title each segment.

Sentence summary: what it looks like Men are discovering Title IX Men are becoming more aware of Title IX, and some are beginning to take an active role in promoting gender equity in sports. Results of Title IX for men Sports are less male-dominated and more inclusive as a result of Title IX.

Post-it Clusters Highlight main article ideas; Transfer ideas in 3-5 words to post-it notes, using 1 post-it per idea; Cluster the post-it notes according to association; Title each cluster of post-it notes.

Post-it clusters: what it looks like AZMerit test rewritten last year Small sample of Why AZMerit is invalid schools “Bar” lowered for seniors

All together now Put it in a sentence. Use a lead-in to cite. In a 2012 TEDTalk, Paolo Cardini lobbies for focus in a multitasked-to-death world.
