Parent Resource Guide to Math and Science Linda Odom EE 622 Dr. Tanner Good evening! Welcome to Chat Night at Paine Primary. This is a presentation of a parent resource guide for math and science. Hopefully you will find the information helpful as you and your child begin your new school year at Paine Primary. Your child will have many opportunities to experience hands-on activities related to science and math.
Math and Science Philosophy Math and Science are the building blocks to a firm foundation of education for all children. Both require an active and engaging environment through the use of hands on activities and manipulatives. Our math and science philosophy is real world application and hands-on learning experiences that create a strong foundation for math and science. The mission of Trussville City Schools is to design engaging and challenging work that results in students learning important content at high levels. Your child will actively engage in projects, games, and units of content that meet the state standards for math and science.
Science Content Kindergarten Solids and Liquids Sun, Light, and Heat Sounds Motion Magnets Living Things Senses Land and Water Seasons Sky Students will engage in meaningful activities that require them to think scientifically. Students will investigate, explore, and manipulate solids, liquids, magnets, and living things. Solids and liquids, sun, light, heat, sound and motion, magnets, living things, senses, land and water, seasons, and the sky are content standards that will be taught in kindergarten this school year.
Science Content First Grade Use of Data Tools Properties of Objects Forces Living Things Human Body Animal Extinction Earth’s Surface Weather Earth’s Resources Recycle Day and Night Students meet in meaningful groups that question, investigate, and learn about the world around them. The students are investigating and measuring the size, weight, and color of an apple. Inquiry is an important concept that is used in science classes. Forces, living things, the human body, animals, recycling, weather, day and night, properties of objects, and earth’s resources are content standards that are taught in first grade.
Solids, Liquids, and Gases Science Content Second Grade Solids, Liquids, and Gases Sound Light Forces Plants Animals Land and Water Erosion Water Cycle Weather Solar System Students have opportunities to touch, roll, turn, and investigate solid and liquid objects. Here students are not told what is in the bottle. Students have to use their senses to determine the type of liquid that is in the bottle. Students brainstorm with others in group settings. They all bounce ideas off of each other. It is truly a collaborative effort! Forces and motion, light and sound, the water cycle, solar system, weather and erosion, plants and animals are content standards that will be covered in the second grade curriculum.
Addition and Subtraction Math Content Kindergarten Count by Ones and Tens Counting Numbers Number Recognition Finding “How Many?” Comparing Numbers Addition and Subtraction Problem Solving Number Sentences Numbers That Make Ten Math Fact to 5 Shapes Patterns Your child will learn many new math concepts this year. Students will be able to count by ones and tens, problem solve, add and subtract, learn about relationships between numbers and the name for numbers. Students will learn about shapes, math facts, numbers that make a ten, and comparing numbers. Paine Primary will be using the new National Math Standards as instructional guides.
Math Content First Grade Addition and Subtraction Problem Solving Counting Numbers Math Facts to 20 Understanding Equal to Number Sentences Comparing Numbers Patterns Measurement Time Graphs Shapes First grade students will learn many new math concepts by using manipulatives and hands-on math activities. Math lessons usually include great pieces of literature that connect reading and math concepts together. Here is a lesson where a teacher read a book about pumpkins. Then, students created their own pumpkins using the many shapes that they had already been taught. Students love to show off their work! You can see circles, triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids.
Math Content Second grade Addition and Subtraction Problem Solving Math Facts to 20 Odd and Even Numbers Multiplication and Division Read, Write, and Count to 1,000 Greater and Less Than Explain Strategies Measurement Telling Time Money Graphs Shapes Second grade students learn math concepts using many different kinds of manipulatives. This student is using pigs to make tens and ones. Students play games using blocks, dice, cubes, flash cards, and counters. Telling time, counting money and making change, geometry, graphs, measurement, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction, problem solving, and reading and writing numbers to 1,000 are the many math concepts your child will learn this year. Learning how to get an answer in math is an important factor in understanding math and relating taught skills to real life situations.
Science Process Skills Make observations Ask questions Learn more Design and conduct the experiment Create meaning Tell others Students are guided to self-discovery of the world around them. Science is doing, learning, wondering, and questioning the things in our world. Students enjoy learning about the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly. Through investigating nature, students create meaning and tell others about what they have learned.
Math Process Skills Make connections to real world situations Construct knowledge Problem solve Investigate Collect and Interpret Data Math processing skills help students make connections to real life problem solving situations. Students that practice these skills on a daily basis are successful in creating meaning in their world.
What Parents Can Do Math Science Practice math facts Count change Problem solve Visit websites together Encourage questions Draw pictures Work puzzles Build with blocks Science Explore nature Cook with your child Visit websites together Explain how things work Go for walks together Go to museums Read to your child Plant a garden There are many things that parents can do to reinforce math skills that have been taught during school hours while at home. Make use of everyday living whenever possible. Have your child count the change in your pocket or purse. Play interactive games on the computer with your child. Practice math facts so that your child readily understands relationships between numbers. Make time for investigating your environment. Cooking with your child, walking with your child, asking questions, and listening to your child will create meaningful knowledge for your child.
Website Resources Math Magician Website: http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Mathmagician/mathsadd.html Summary: This website is great for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division practice. The website can be used by teachers, parents, and students for additional fact practice. Geometry http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/icy_slides_flips_turns/ Summary: This website will help parents understand the new terminology used in the classroom for geometry. Students and parents can play games with geometric shapes by turning, flipping, and sliding them. Science A-Z http://www.sciencea-z.com/ Summary: Students can chose from life, earth, physical, and process science topics. State and National standards are correlated to the topics. Fun Brain http://www.funbrain.com/ Summary: This website has many different games that students can play to help with math facts. The baseball game is a favorite! PBS http://www.pbskidsplay.org/popunder Summary: This is a great website that will help with inquiry skills in science and math. There are plenty of games for all ages. These are just a few of the many websites that students and parents can visit together to supplement the math and science experiences that are happening in the classroom. Teachers have many other websites posted on their home page that you can visit with your child. This concludes the presentation of our math and science programs at Paine Primary. Questions from the audience? Thank you for your time and welcome to Paine Primary. A place where our journey begins……
