Where do volcanoes and earthquakes happen?

Where do earthquakes and volcanoes happen? Today we are learning about… where in the world we find earthquakes and volcanoes, and why they occur in these places. By the end of the lesson… ALL can describe the patterns of tectonic activity (Level 4) MOST should explain the patterns of tectonic activity (Level 5) SOME can explain why the UK has no volcanoes (Level 6)

The Plates

Where do earthquakes and volcanoes happen? Mark on the map where the volcanoes and earthquakes happen, using the grid references in the table. Describe where you find tectonic activity Explain why you find tectonic activity in the places you do [hint: think about what the plates are doing] Why are there no volcanoes in the UK? Will your map look different in 100 million years? Explain your answer. Answer: 484,000,000 so 484 million years. Take it Further! A move of 1 degree south equals 440 km. Suppose our plate moves south at 5 cm a year. How long will it take Newcastle to reach the equator? (Newcastle is at 55 degrees north.)

Where do earthquakes and volcanoes happen? Earthquakes and volcanoes occur along _______________________________. This means that they occur in __________________ bands and all around the world. The reason earthquakes and volcanoes occur here is because the plates are _______________. The UK is not along a _____________________________ which is why there are no active volcanoes in Britain.
