Lesley Potts Recruitment Manager Fonterra Taranaki May 2016

Agenda Background and types of jobs CV and Cover Letters Common mistakes at interview Questions

Fonterra Taranaki Total 17000 employees around the world, approx 2000 in Taranaki across 5 sites Job opportunities in many different areas e.g. Engineering, Science & Technology, Environment & Farming, Manufacturing, HR, Sales & Marketing, Supply Chain, Transport to name a few Hundreds of applications usually received for most roles e.g. 700+ applications received recently for Operator positions Personally work with Managers locally to fill 200-250 roles every year

CV and Cover Letters Target every application to the requirements of the ad, the aim is to get an interview with it Do not apply for every job advertised e.g. spamming your CV Always include a Cover Letter Make sure CV lists all your strengths e.g. if captain of a sports team that shows an employer that you have leadership potential. Getting involved in school groups/activities and sports shows team player potential A CV is a marketing document, promoting skills (no text language, slang, abbreviations). List all qualifications and if high marks put in results (don’t list every NCEA credit every achieved!) It should be no longer than 3 - 4 pages. Don’t have silly email addresses and watch your online profile when applying for jobs as well as voice mails Don’t exaggerate skills/experience/qualifications

Common mistakes at interview Inconsistencies in verbal response and dishonesty or exaggeration No detail in response to questions or just don’t hardly talk at all. Don’t seem to be prepared for interview questions at all Unwilling to provide referees Not answering the questions, getting off track Inappropriate behaviour at interview e.g. mobiles, slouching Inappropriate presentation in what they wear or not making good first impression e.g. shaking hands Lack of research of company/job/interviewers Consistent use of “we” statements (it looks like they are trying to claim others success). They should talk about what they have done personally. Using the same example over and over Not asking any questions at the end of the interview … by no means an exhaustive list!
