Section 3.2 Finding Part

The Components of a Percent Problem 1. BASE: the whole or total, starting point, or that to which something is compared 2. RATE: the percent (%) 3. PART: The result of multiplying the base and rate. PART of the whole.

The Percent Formula 1) 25% of 72 2) 130% of 210 3) ½ % of 900 P = B x R Part = Base x Rate Ex: find the part 1) 25% of 72 2) 130% of 210 3) ½ % of 900

Calculating Sales Tax P = B x R Sales tax = Sales x Sales Tax Rate EX: Your dinner bill (not including the 7.5% sales tax) was $9.25. Determine the amount of sales tax and the total cost before tip. Round to the nearest penny.

Helpful hints… 1. The base is usually preceded by words like OF or ON. It represents the whole. 2. The rate is followed by the word percent or %. 3. The part is in the same units as the base and is usually a portion of the base.

Examples (from p 92) 18. A survey of 30 large retailers showed that expenses averaged 92.4% of total sales. Estimate the expenses for a firm with $138 million is quarterly sales to the nearest tenth of a million dollars.

25. It is estimated that 29.5% of automobile crashes are caused by driver distractions, such as texting. If there are 16,450 automobile crashes in a study, what number would be caused by driver distractions? Round to the nearest whole number.

32. A family of four with a monthly income of $5150 spends 90% of its earnings and saves the balance for a down payment of a house. Find (a) the monthly savings and (b) the annual savings of the family.
