Round 1: The Romans

1. What does an archaeologist do? Dig up the ground, find clues about the past and work out what they mean. Write books about the past. Dig up the ground, so that it is clear and ready to build on.

2. Why was Rome given this name? The Emperor decided that this was the best name for the capital city. The legend says that Romulus and Remus had a fight. Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself. Rome means ‘middle of the country’ in Latin.

3. How many Roman Gods and Goddesses were there altogether? 15 20 12

4. Which order did Romans visit the rooms of a Roman Bath House in? Frigidarium (cold) then the tepidarium (warm) and finally the caldarium (hot). Caldarium (hot) then the tepidarium (warm) and finally the frigidarium (cold). Tepidarium (warm) then the caldarium (hot) and finally the frigidarium (cold).

6. What do the zigzags on a Roman soldier’s shield represent? It represents the lightning bolt which was the symbol for Jupiter: King of the Gods. It represents the strength of the soldiers in the army. It represents the straight lines soldiers marched in.

7. What does the word ‘Empire’ mean? A group of countries ruled by one person called an Emperor. A group of countries that have been bought by a rich person, called an Emperor. A group of countries that are not separated by the sea.

8. Who was the Emperor of Rome in 43AD when the Romans conquered Britain? Emperor Nero Emperor Claudius Emperor Caesar

9. Which gladiator would stand the best chance of surviving? Retiarii (They had a trident, net and dagger. Sometimes armour too). Hoplomachi (They had full armour, a shield and a sword). Saggitarii (They rode a horse and had a bow and arrows).

10. What are these numbers in Roman numerals? I V X XII 1, 3, 5 and 7. 1, 5, 10 and 12. 1, 10, 20 and 22.
