WELCOME TO 1st GRADE!

A little about me! Bachelor’s degree from University of Georgia in Early Childhood Education and Master’s Degree from Auburn University Montgomery 34th year teaching 2 years in Special Education 3 year in 2ndgrade 5 years in Kindergarten 5 years in 3rd Grade This is my 19th year in 1st grade

www.classdojo.com Students who have 80% or higher on dojo will be rewarded with… Grade level incentives (Friday afternoons) Panther Celebrations (end of the month)

Nightly Homework will include… Sight Word Practice (220 Dolch + Fry Words) Read for 20 minutes & complete reading log Study Word Wall Words Reading logs will be due on Friday in the Panther Book! Panther Books-Your reference for word wall words each week & possible reminders from teachers or school

Upcoming standards in Foundations of Reading Isolate beginning, middle and ending sounds in one-syllable words Identify onsets and rime in spoken one-syllable words Add, delete or substitute target sounds to change words Automatically segment one-syllable words into sounds Automatically generate the sounds for all letters and letter patterns, including long and short vowels Apply knowledge of letter-sound correspondence to decode new words Read words containing consonant blends and digraphs Read words with inflectional endings Read words containing vowel digraphs and r-controlled vowels Use spelling patterns to recognize words

Upcoming standards in Literary & Informational Reading Story Elements: Characters, Setting, Plot (beginning, middle, end) Re-tells story with key details, main idea, or lesson. Reading Strategies to understand and gain meaning from Grade-level Text Make Predictions based on prior knowledge Ask & Answer questions about characters, setting, problems, events, & resolution Retell stories WITH details Distinguish between fact & fiction Identify main idea & details Identify cause & Effect Recognize & use graphic features and graphic organizers to understand text Self-monitor & re-read when necessary. Please help us encourage them to re-read if something they say doesn’t make sense!

How can parents help their child? Read with your child EVERY night!!! Make sight word study fun! Review even after mastery so they retain the information. -Make flash cards -Play games -Use the computer FIRST IN MATH is a WONDERFUL resource that will soon be available to you! Review class work sent home each week to see weak areas your child needs practice with! Stay positive & encourage them to do their best each day!!!!
