Basics for Emergency Power Presented by Larry Lovell – N7RGW Back Up Power Basics for Emergency Power Presented by Larry Lovell – N7RGW

What You Need To Know Determine Power Needed (Current and Voltage) AC How long do you need to supply emergency power Battery – type, current capacity (Amp Hours) DC Power Distribution Method Method to recharge Battery Charger – recharge battery from house power. Solar – charge battery Generator – charge battery and supply AC power Wind – charge battery Inverter – converts DC to AC

You Should Start With Back – Up Batteries for your Hand Held Radio Some method of keeping batteries charged Supply Energy to other Amateur Equipment Power for Lighting Power for Heat or Cooling

Stand By Power - UPS Everyone should have one of these for your computer. But can also be used as a backup for HAM Radio. Add additional batteries and it will last longer. Each UPS contains: A Battery An Inverter (DC to AC) EMI/RFI line noise filters Full-time lightning protection AC Sockets Rating such as 550 VA/330W can tell you the maximum power that can be supplied. It will also give an estimate of time it will operate without external power. Cost: $60+

Trickle Charger – About $9 Just Add Batteries

Solar Power or Wind Power Cost $140 to $200 for Solar Just Add Batteries Will operate even when cloudy. www.harborfreight.com

Windmill Windmill will recharge battery and supply 12 volts or 120 volts depending on choice. Cost begins at about $400. Need a Regulator, batteries and distribution method. Some cities require a permit for permission to install.

Harbor Freight Included With Solar Three 15 watt solar panels produce clean, quiet energy Lightweight, weatherproof construction Amorphous silicon solar cells for maximum output in both bright and cloudy conditions Voltage regulator has easy-to-read LED display, 12V cigarette lighter socket, 5V USB, 3-6-9V DC outlets and two 12V sockets 2 - included Light Kit Includes mounting hardware, 12V Light Kit, battery terminal clamps and universal DC power adapter Accessories Included Coupons are available to reduce cost.

Inverter To Convert DC to AC 2000 Watt ($150+) 400 Watt ($35)

Gas Generator - $350 to $1500 Choose Wattage for total demand needed. 120 Volt 240 Volts Some have 12 volt panel Most often Generators have pull chord. Some have Electric Start Some come with wheels Most use gasoline, but dual fuel is available to use propane as well.

House Manual Electric Power Switch - $400 This switch prevents your generator power from leaving your house and going into the power lines. Without this switch, you could kill a Utility Worker trying to repair the Power Lines. May require an experienced Electrician to install Connect to Generator

Whole House Automatic -$ 5000+ Usually powered by Natural Gas or Propane. Power is switched automatically when the Home looses regular Utility power. Requires Licensed Electrician to install.

Anderson Power Pole Connectors Anderson Power Pole Connectors are becoming a HAM standard. You can buy prewired cables or make your own AMP Are the 15, 30 & 45 amp Powerpoles interchangeable? Yes. The 15, 30 & 45 amp contacts all use the same housing. Therefore, they all plug into each other. The only difference between the 15, 30 & 45 amp contacts is the size of the receiving barrel that holds the wire.

What Batteries Should Be Used Lead-Acid – Least Expensive, Sizes vary (Wattage and Amp Hour) Easy to maintain. Nickel Cadmium – Easily Available. Problem with disposal and capacity. Nickle Metal Hydride – Resolves most problems associated with Nickel Cadmium. Lithium Ion – High Energy Density more energy per square foot Danger in charging (Requires Specialized Charger) Available in variety of sizes Long life

How Much Power Do You Need? Icom IC-718 Max Power Out: 100 Watts KT-8900 Kenwood TH-D7A Output Power: 5 watts Receive: 25 mA Transmit: 1.7 Amp max. Dual Band Packet and APRS capable Output Power: 25 watts Off: 30 mA Receive: 280 mA Transmit: 2.60 A 30 watts 1.46 A 20 watts
