What is a Patient Participation group (PPG)? From April 2016, it has ben a contractual requirement for all English practices to form a PPG during the year ahead and to make reasonable efforts for this to be representative of the practice population. The first PPG was set up by a GP in 1972. Four in ten English practices now have a PPG. PPG’s evolve to meet local needs, each PPG is different. The aims and work of each PPG entirely depends on local needs. Their aim is to ensure that their practice puts the patient, and improving health at the heart of everything it does Funding a PPG is commensurate with their activities and are normally met by the practice. Funding is minimal. Recognition of the worth of an active PPG as a visible and necessary feature of practice , would normally result in obtaining adequate funding National Association for Patient Participation ( NAPP) gives the following examples of what work a PPG can do…..

Ppgs provide the patient perspective by: Conducting patient surveys or collecting feedback in the waiting room/email/text Advising the practice and patients of new systems and treatments Sharing good practice by networking with other PPGs Could sit on recruitment panels for new staff Lobbying to improve a whole range of health services

Ppgs promote health matters by: 6. Organising presentations on important health needs 7. Producing a directory of self care support groups 8.Running courses within the surgery e.g. on line training 9. Raising awareness of key public health messages e.g. newsletter 10. Running volunteer support groups

PPGS IMROVE COMMUNINCATION BY : 11. Distributing regular newsletters 12. Building 2 way relationships between patients and the practice 13. Promoting awareness of and access to local health services 14. Developing a patient library or information resource centre 15. Improving the practice leaflets and website

Ppgs influence the devlepoment of services by : 16. Advising on the development of new or existing practice premises 17. Representing patient views on the purchase of health services 18. Co-ordinating with other PPGs to improve wider health care delivery 19. Bidding with the practice to provide new services 20. Fundraising to provide services not covered by NHS England

And finally to summarise in 21 words: 21. Make stronger the relationship between patients and their practices, which is critical to the provision of modern, high-quality general practice AMPPPG is not achieving all of 1-20 ( yet !) but since our formation in 2013, we believe we are striving towards 21!
