Presentation transcript:

‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding: Chapter 3 Lesson Objectives: to explore character and plot development to explore the characters of Simon and Piggy in more detail

“The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach. It wasn’t half cold down there in the night.” Piggy What does this reveal about Piggy’s character?

Chapter 3: Huts on the beach Jack and Ralph start to fall out Jack and his team go off hunting Ralph is left building shelters with only Simon to help him Jack’s hunting trip is unsuccessful Simon goes off into the woods on his own

‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding: Chapter 3 - Simon Lesson Objectives: to identify symbolic aspects of Simon’s character

Simon “… he walked into the forest with an air of purpose. He was a small, skinny boy, his chin pointed , and his eyes so bright they had deceived Ralph into thinking him delightfully gay and wicked. The coarse mop of black hair was long and swung down, almost concealing a low, broad forehead…” (page 57 )

Simon’s den … Why does Simon want to be alone? “the whole space was walled with dark aromatic bushes” “a rapid climber flaunted red and yellow sprays” “high jungle closed in” “tall trunks bore unexpected pale flowers” “nothing moved but a pair of gaudy butterflies” “the creepers dropped their ropes like the rigging of foundered ships”

What happens as the sun goes down on the island? Read the last two paragraphs of chapter 3 again. Use quotations from these paragraphs to help you answer this question using the PEE paragraph structure. P - make a POINT E - support it with EVIDENCE E - EXPLAIN what it makes you think/feel/imagine
