IST and the global race to knowledge The US invests 3 times more on RTD in IST 52% of RTD in IST in OECD countries is in the US, 22% in Japan, and 17% in Europe Japanese companies spend 3 times more of their value added on RTD in IST In Japan 17% of the value added in the IST sector is spent on R&D, In the US it is 10%, and in Europe it is 6% Research in the EU is often fragmented Member states are less and less able to build critical mass, on individual bases, in strategic areas Europe is still lagging behind in investing in research in IST to prepare for the next generation of products and services IST underpins the competitive “race” to knowledge The US invests 3 times more on RTD in IST The EU effort is often fragmented

We have now to plan to keep our current position and, if possible, to further enhance it. GÈANT is the first research network widely implementing 10 Gbps technology. Moreover the reach and the pervasiveness of the European Research Network Infrastructure as a whole (that is the result of the integration and co-operation of GÈANT and of the individual National Research and Education Networks) has no near comparison in the world. As an example we can compare the number of research sites connected by Internet2 initiatives in the USA (about 200) with the nearly 3000 research sites that are connected to the European research network.
