The Global Workplace In the global workplace, we achieve success through: conscious communication applied technology strong knowledge and skill base   Breakthrough skills a skill, or skill set, that allows people to act purposefully and competently with others in a global environment

Breakthrough Skills Those competing in the global workplace should develop breakthrough skills with four goals in mind: developing a global mindset practicing cultural agility managing relationships creating opportunity

Four Goals of Breakthrough Skills Having a global mindset working in or leading global organizations that exist within a variety of different social, economic, and political environments Practicing cultural agility recognizing that important communication differences exist among people from different cultures. Managing relationships collaborating with others in a way that ensures everyone involved achieves their professional goals.   Creating opportunity identifying market trends, employee and customer needs, and ways to monitor costs and add value to what you do.

Types of Communication Business and Professional Communication Human Communication Electronically Mediated Communication speaking informal conversations phone conversations listening interviews text messages relating group and team meetings satellite conferences writing informative briefings and speeches personal and company web pages responding sales pitches e-mail persuasive presentations instant messaging social networking e-commerce

Conscious Communication is mindful displays awareness of communication as a process respects diversity cultural, gender, racial, religious, and socioeconomic differences requires balancing strategy, ethics, and outcomes Strategic Communication: communication planned with specific audiences and specific intentions in mind, and  that is cognizant of individual and cultural differences.

Step 1: Choose Choosing a communication goal involves conducting a complete assessment of the following: Audience needs and Likely communication outcomes The criteria against which you will measure your success

Step 2: Create Determining the best organization for your message Develop support for each point within the message Craft an introduction and conclusion, if appropriate.

Step 3: Coordinate Assemble as much information as you can about how your agenda, plan, or position fits within the mission and goals of the organization. Ask the team or meeting leader if you are unsure about the purpose of a meeting, memo, or presentation. Communicate with other members of the organization (teams, departments, supervisors, and managers) your need for input and feedback. Respect the professional and personal boundaries of others. Adapt your message, episode, or event accordingly.
