SPS-FIRE The SPS Fire Safety Project Planning Status R. Billen BE-ASR 30th June 2017 LS2C Meeting

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project SPS-FIRE Safety Project launched in Sep-2016 after the SPS Fire Safety Study Jan-2015 to Jul-2016 LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project

Recap of the current situation The SPS fire safety equipment and standards date from the 1970s. Therefore consolidation and improvement is recommended. The fire load, principally cable insulation, is deemed capable of fuelling fires in the order of tens of Megawatts of heat release rate in certain areas. The SPS has no fire compartments in the tunnel to impede the propagation of fire and potentially activated smoke. The evacuation system is not currently capable of evacuating the tunnel remotely, neither evacuating large tunnel areas. Fire-fighting possibilities are currently extremely limited LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project

Four Project Work Packages WP1: (leader: Richard Morton) Comprehensive active and passive fire compartment scheme with ventilation isolation WP2: (leader: Michael Dole) Automatic fire detection and protection system WP3: (Leader: Willy Van Den Broucke) Significantly enhanced manual fire fighting means with dry risers and CAFS (Compresssed Air Foam System) trailers WP4: (Leader: Miriam Munoz Codoceo/Anna Suwalska) Modern water based automatic Fire Extinguishing system in PA and TA/LSS LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP1 – Fire Compartments The fire compartments concern the SPS and transfer line connections only. Fire partitions are required in the vicinity of the underground area of the access shaft and at the midpoint of each arc. Some 50 doors/frames to be installed of 5 different location types SPS Point 7 is not included. LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project R. Morton

WP1 – Fire Compartments - Planning Currently confirming commitment and resources for the development of the basic cross sections. Detailed planning for LS2 has started but requires complex interfaces with all other activities, first detailed draft due by end 2017. LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project R. Morton

WP1 – Outstanding Issues Timescale for the scan processing and cross sections Schedule for the cross sections to be confirmed Additional resources may be needed for general arrangement drawings and as built drawings Some areas will need additional scans/on site measurements – technical stops and YETS Fire test Very useful but not essential, go-no-go decision to be made Cost was not calculated nor foreseen Organizational risk Planning and coordination of the works day to day On site supervision - how many and who? Quality control – HSE? Reception and maintenance – Doors (EN?), Partition (SMB?), overall (HSE?) Future coordination of works (post LS2) for cable pulling pipework etc – Responsibility for reinstatement of the partition? Technical specification Requires input from the EN maintenance team for the specification and in the reception of the works as well as EN-EL, EN-CV and FB Review of cost and schedule of work package needed on the basis of the current base line LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project R. LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP4 – Planning 2018-2021 LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

WP4 – Layout at each SPS point LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP4 – Works Location (per SPS point): BA surface (next to the current sprinkler station) SPS Shaft TA Gallery, TA Passage, TA Storage Area (behind the lift) LSS+, LSS-, Intersection Duration (per SPS point) 10 - 14 weeks of installation 2 weeks for commissioning 2 - 4 weeks for dismantling of the old system (Shafts) Start of works: Week 04, 2019 Scheduled End: Week 30/2020 Impact on other works: Heavy piping works (welding, lowering down pipes) – the access through the shaft stairs might be limited through a period of time. Limited space for other works Shafts - no scaffolding but the access through the shaft stairs might be limited TA Passage, TA Storage Area, LSS, Intersection: Scaffolding (6.0 x 1.5 x 3.0 m) TA Gallery – access might be difficult Other services (Plan. Activity 11195) Power, Cabling from LSS, TA to BA surface (3 weeks before he installation end) Drainage (SMB) HSE-FB, HSE-SEE for Commissioning LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP4 – 2019-2020 site planning CASE1: SPS point 7 not included in the scope In line with the original SPS-FIRE Safety project planning LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP4 – 2019-2020 site planning CASE2: SPS point 7 included in the scope Not foreseen in the original SPS-FIRE Safety Project planning Recent request, not discussed at project level LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project WP4 – Main Constraints Integration: installation of the new system shall be done prior to dismantling of a legacy system but little physical space is available (the most critical problem is in BAs). LS2 schedule is tight, leaves little margin for delays – if SPS7 is added to the scope the parallel installations in two SPS points at the same time are inevitable (= 2 contractor teams). LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project A. Suwalska

LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project Closing remarks Other SPS areas have the same fire safety issues SPS-FIRE Safety Project Scope defined in the mandate, limited to the SPS ring, its 6 access shafts, TT10, TT20 North Area : will be upgraded during LS3 SPS Point 7 Originally excluded from the scope due to the risk analysis to perform, clearly more complicated that for the other points Arguments by BE-ICS-AS to include the work in the contracts, execute during LS2 All WPs would be involved, not discussed yet, meeting scheduled on 3rd July Issues to address: funding, risk analysis, implications for all WPs, work volume, manpower, supervision,… Full Project Review foreseen in Autumn 2017 All project information on: http://www.cern.ch/spsfsp LS2C meeting 30-Jun-2017 SPS Fire Safety Project
