25 + 47 = 72 Children need experience with using the apparatus. Play a build a square – roll two dice add together and collect that number of Dienes. Winner is first to 100. What vocabulary do you want the children practising? How could this link to practise of number bonds? When ready they can be introduced to vertical format. If schools choose children can still record as expanded (show on flip chart next to slides) but children may not feel this is necessary as they can see the practical resources which are modeling what they are doing. 25 + 47 = 72 10 10
